Days 1–15: Vietnam - A symphony of energy culture and nature
We started our 45-day Vietnam Laos Cambodia travel itinerary by landing in Ho Chi Minh City, (formerly Saigon) with wide eyes and open hearts. The city buzzed with life: scooters zipping past like swarms of bees, street vendors cooking up fragrant bowls of pho, and colonial-era buildings standing beside sleek glass towers.
We visited the War Remnants Museum, a sobering experience that sparked deep conversations with our children, and after was Saigon Central Post Office, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Independence Palace,... A half-day at the Cu Chi Tunnels brought us into the underground world of Vietnam’s wartime past, and we marveled at the resilience of its people.

Next, we explored the lush Mekong Delta. In Can Tho, we awoke at dawn to glide along Cai Rang floating market, wooden boats piled with tropical fruits and vegetables, locals bartering, coffee served from boat to boat.
We cycled along narrow village paths, tasted fresh coconut candy in Ben Tre, sud Vietnam in our Vietnam Laos Cambodia 45-days itinerary, and even stayed with a family in a humble but welcoming homestay in Mekong delta.

From Hanoi, we escaped for Halong Bay 2-day cruise trip. Sailing among the limestone karsts, kayaking in jade-green waters, and sleeping under a blanket of stars was easily one of the highlights of our Vietnam leg. Days 16 - 30: Laos with gentle rhythms, warm smiles, and timeless spirit
From Hanoi, we flew to Luang Prabang, Laos, a city I can only describe as soul-soothing. Life there moves slowly. Each morning, barefoot monks in saffron robes collect alms from locals. We joined in the ceremony respectfully, and our kids were moved by its grace.

A highlight was our cooking class with a local family. In their backyard, we learned to prepare mok pa (steamed fish in banana leaf) and sticky rice, best specialitie in Laos, which all tourists must try when comming this country. It felt like more than a meal, it was cultural immersion.

45-day Indochina travel itinerary in Laos, Our last Laotian stop was Vientiane, the quiet capital, indispensable in your 15-day Laos travel itinerary like as my family.
We explored Pha That Luang, Laos’s golden national stupa, and the COPE Center, which educates visitors on the long-lasting impact of unexploded bombs from past conflicts, Patuxai, Budha park with pleseant emotion, with Wat Sisaket - the most famous Vientiane temple.
Our Vientiane family trip this year, it was a sobering reminder of history’s scars and the resilience of the human spirit.
Days 31 - 45: Cambodia between shadows and light
We crossed into Cambodia overland and arrived in Siem Reap, where our children gasped the first time they saw Angkor Wat at sunrise. We spent four full days exploring the temples of Angkor Archaeological Park—from the tree-entangled ruins of Ta Prohm to the giant smiling faces of Bayon, each site felt like a storybook come to life.
Our local guide, Dara, was incredible. His stories, some about history, others personal, added layers of meaning to every stone. One moment I’ll never forget: standing in silence inside a ruined temple, listening to the hum of cicadas, and feeling like time had stopped.
From Siem Reap, we journeyed to Battambang, a quieter town full of charm. The kids loved the quirky Bamboo Train, which bumped and rattled through the countryside. We visited local artists, witnessed bat colonies fly out from a mountain cave at dusk, and took a village tour where we learned how rice paper is made.

Our final destination was Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Here, beauty and heartbreak sit side by side. We visited the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, but also made the conscious decision to tour the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields. These places are difficult but important. As a mother, I found it hard, but necessary, to explain this history to our children. And through these moments, we grew closer as a family.
We ended our journey with a sunset, sipping fresh coconut and reflecting on all we had seen, learned, and shared in our 45-day Vietnam Laos Cambodia itinerary !
