Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang

After my trip to Vietnam, I continued my adventure with the Laos tour agency Autour Asia, for a 7-day tour in northern Laos. This time, I focused exclusively on northern Laos because the destination there particularly appealed to me, especially the former royal capital, Luang Prabang, where I planned to spend most of my time.

In general, Luang Prabang is an ideal destination for travelers seeking a peaceful atmosphere. The city is neither too noisy nor too lively, yet it still offers plenty of interesting activities. Additionally, northern Lao provinces like Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi boast stunning natural landscapes and a pleasant climate, making this region a must-visit.

My flight from Hanoi to Luang Prabang was in the evening, so when I arrived at my hotel, it was late. I took advantage of this first night to rest and prepare for the 7 days in northern Laos ahead.

Day 2: Exploring Luang Prabang and the Mekong

On the second day of my 7-day trip to northern Laos, I spent the morning exploring Luang Prabang’s must-see attractions, including the Luang Prabang National Museum and Wat Xieng Thong Temple. These iconic sites are filled with fascinating stories about Lao culture, religion, and history. By late morning, I hiked up to the top of Mount Phousi, where a small temple awaited me. However, what amazed me the most was the panoramic view of Luang Prabang stretching peacefully along the majestic Mekong River.

After lunch, I embarked on a boat trip along the Mekong. The journey took me past charming villages with traditional houses lining the river before stopping at the sacred Pak Ou Caves. The day ended beautifully with a cocktail while watching the sunset over the Mekong — a peaceful and enchanting moment in northern Laos.

The evening was just as captivating with a stroll through the Luang Prabang night market. The lively and warm atmosphere was filled with stalls selling local handicrafts and authentic souvenirs. The food section was vibrant and welcoming, featuring large communal tables where I enjoyed a variety of Lao dishes in a truly local setting.

Day 3: Kuang Si Waterfalls – Highlight of the trip

This was the most memorable day of my 7-day journey in northern Laos: exploring the Kuang Si Waterfalls. To get there, I took a tuk-tuk for about an hour. The road was relatively flat but winding. Fortunately, the journey was made enjoyable by stunning landscapes, featuring mountains of various shapes and a bright blue sky. Once I arrived, I immediately realized that the Kuang Si Waterfalls were worth the northern Laos trip.

Before reaching the falls, I visited the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center, where these adorable animals are carefully protected while enjoying a well-adapted living space. Then, as I ventured further, I finally discovered the different crystal-clear cascades that make up the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Here, I took a refreshing swim, enjoyed a natural fish massage, and savored a plate of fried rice at a nearby restaurant.

In the afternoon, I stopped by an ethnic village near Luang Prabang, where I met local Hmong people. Warm and welcoming, they introduced me to some of their traditional crafts. To wrap up this third day of my 7-day northern Laos trip, I enjoyed a Lao beer while admiring the Mekong, illuminated by the evening lights.

Day 4: Journey to Nong Khiaw Village

I started my day early to prepare for a 4-hour journey to the village of Nong Khiaw. This charming village, nestled on the banks of the Nam Ou River, is surrounded by winding jungle trails leading to steep limestone cliffs that offer panoramic views of the breathtaking landscapes of northern Laos. If you love hiking, Nong Khiaw is a must-visit destination.

My first day in Nong Khiaw was quite relaxing. I strolled through the village, explored the Pha Kuang Cave with its stunning stalactite formations, and later enjoyed a coffee and dinner while admiring the Nam Ou River meandering between the mountains.

Day 5: Trekking in Nong Khiaw

On the fifth day of my 7-day trip to northern Laos, I went on a hike around Nong Khiaw. My first stop was the Phadeng Peak, a roughly 2-hour ascent through steep trails. Once at the top, I was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the peaceful village of Nong Khiaw.

In the afternoon, I visited the artisan houses in the Khmu village. I observed their traditional craftsmanship, created with simple tools, and took the opportunity to purchase some handmade souvenirs.

Day 6: Boat ride to Muang Ngoi

I took a group boat trip to Ban Sopkong, followed by an hour-long hike to Tad Mok Waterfall. This area is also home to the Khmu ethnic group, allowing me to meet them and learn more about their way of life. The trail leading to the waterfall was stunning, winding through lush green rice fields and wild mountain forests.

At noon, I took the boat to Muang Ngoi. Along the way, I marveled at the scenery along the river, with its bamboo forests, traditional villages, and fish farms. Once in Muang Ngoi, I took time to relax and enjoy northern Lao cuisine in open-air restaurants. Later, I went kayaking and watched a spectacular sunset over this peaceful little village. It was the perfect way to spend my final night in northern Laos 7 days.

Day 7: Return to Luang Prabang

On the last day of my 7-day journey in northern Laos, I returned to Luang Prabang by car, where I took time to rest and buy some souvenirs in local shops before packing my bags for my night flight. And so, my adventure in northern Laos came to an end.
