Hello everyone, I'm Johanne. During my 10-day journey exploring Northern Vietnam with Autour Asia, Vietnam tour agency I had some truly unforgettable experiences - from admiring the majestic landscapes of Ha Giang, taking a boat ride on the emerald Nho Que River, visiting the stunning Ban Gioc Waterfall, to spending the night in traditional stilt houses of the Tay and Lolo ethnic groups. The trip was not only visually breathtaking but also rich in cultural value. Everything was professionally and thoughtfully organized, making the whole experience comfortable and seamless. If you're looking for a 10-day itinerary in North Vietnam, I highly recommend checking out this one!

Here is the “North vietnam 10 day itinerary”:

1. Day 1: Hanoi - Ha Giang (300km ~ 6 hours)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Hanoi to Ha Giang, a mountainous province nestled at the northernmost point of Vietnam near the Chinese border. The route passes through Phu Tho and Tuyen Quang, regions known for their peaceful countryside and lush, undulating hills. Along the way, you’ll make several stops to explore local plantations, farming communities, and enjoy the rustic charm of northern Vietnam. You can also try local street snacks, photograph terraced landscapes, or chat with roadside farmers for authentic interactions.
Tày people in Ha Giang
Upon arrival in Ha Giang in the early afternoon, take a walk through traditional Tay ethnic villages such as Ban Tha, Ban Ha Thanh, and Ban Tan Thanh. These picturesque settlements are surrounded by rice paddies and palm trees, with residents living in stilt houses roofed with palm leaves. Tays are known for their self-sufficient lifestyle, cultivating rice, corn, vegetables, raising fish, and maintaining home gardens and livestock pens. Women typically wear long black dresses, blue shirts, and conical hats. While here, visitors can join locals in light gardening or rice-husking activities, enjoy traditional Tay herbal teas, or participate in a short weaving demonstration if available.

In the evening, you’ll be warmly welcomed into a Tay family’s home, where you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner and experience life in a stilt house. Overnight with the host family.

2. Day 2: Ha Giang - Quan Ba - Dong Van (150km ~ 4 hours)

Dong Van Karst Plateau
This second day of your 10 days northern Vietnam experience leads you to Dong Van Karst Plateau, home to Vietnam’s largest karst plateau. After breakfast, say goodbye to your hosts and hit the road towards Dong Van, home to Vietnam’s largest karst plateau. At 1,250 meters above sea level and covering 600 square kilometers, this geological marvel is also one of Asia's most important geo-parks.

Hmong women in Lung Tam village
The winding road leads through a landscape of stone forests, deep valleys, and villages inhabited by various ethnic minorities. Along the way, you’ll visit a linen weaving cooperative run by Hmong women in Lung Tam, admire centuries-old earthen houses with tiled roofs in Pho Cao, and discover the historical residence of Vuong Chinh Duc, the former Hmong king, in Sa Phin. This palace stands as a testament to the region's unique cultural blend and its ties to French colonial history. For those interested in local crafts, there’s an opportunity to buy handmade hemp textiles or talk with artisans about their techniques passed down through generations.

Arrive in Dong Van in the late afternoon and take a walk through its charming old quarter with colonial-era architecture and hundred-year-old houses. Visitors may enjoy sipping local coffee at vintage-style cafés, shopping for embroidered items, or joining a street food tasting with local favorites such as thắng cố (Hmong-style stew). Overnight in a hotel.

You can take time to photograph the unique rock formations, observe farming practices such as maize drying, and if lucky, join an ethnic market or music gathering depending on the day.

Originating in Yunnan, this river weaves between steep cliffs and jungle-clad mountains, offering a truly unforgettable experience. Visitors may also swim in designated areas, rent a kayak, or enjoy a quiet riverside picnic before resuming the journey.

Khuoi Khon village
Disembark and continue by road to Bao Lac, arriving at Khuoi Khon village, home to the Black Lolo minority - famous from the French TV show “Rendez-vous en terre inconnue.” Settle into a homestay in a traditional stilt house. Guests are encouraged to learn a few Lolo dance steps, watch traditional music performances, or help cook a meal using local ingredients. Overnight in Khuoi Khon.

5. Day 5: Bao Lac - Quang Uyen (150km ~ 3.5 hours)

These villages maintain ancestral techniques and are remarkably untouched by modern life. Visitors can try sharpening knives with artisans, roll incense sticks using traditional methods, or buy unique handmade souvenirs to take home.

Puong Cave

Visit Puong Cave, echoing with bat calls, then float downstream to the Dau Dang Waterfall. End the cruise at Po Lu village and check in with your Tay host family, Chi and Hoa. In the evening, take a short walk to meet locals who rely on fishing, maize, and banana drying for their livelihood. You can also join a local fishing trip, watch how canoes are handmade, or enjoy tea under the stars by the lakeshore.

Dinner and overnight in a traditional Tay stilt house beside the lake.

8. Day 8: Ba Be - Hanoi (5.5 hours drive)

Begin the morning with a leisurely cycling tour along quiet paths weaving through rice paddies, tropical forest, and small streams. Ba Be National Park is home to over 550 plant species and countless animals including mammals, birds, and butterflies.
Hua Ma Cave
Visit the Hua Ma Cave, steeped in legends, and explore nearby Tay and Nung villages. You may also stop by a community-run eco-center to learn about wildlife conservation in the area or sample herbal drinks made from forest plants. In the afternoon, return to Hanoi and check into your hotel for the night. Enjoy a free evening in the capital - perhaps visit a night market or try egg coffee in the Old Quarter.

9. Day 9: Hanoi - Halong Bay Cruise

Depart early for Halong Bay, Vietnam’s most iconic seascape. Board a traditional wooden junk for a breathtaking cruise through Bai Tu Long Bay, the less touristy northern section of Halong.
Thien Canh Son Cave
Cruise past whimsical rock formations resembling sails, animals, and incense burners. Explore the magical Thien Canh Son Cave with its ancient rock formations. Continue to Cap La for swimming and kayaking (weather permitting). Relax on the sun deck, then join a cooking demonstration where you’ll learn to prepare spring rolls. Depending on your flight time, transfer to the airport for your journey home.

End of services.

III. Travel tips for 10 Days in Northern Vietnam

🧭 1. Pack smart for diverse terrain

Northern Vietnam’s weather and landscapes vary greatly -  from cool mountain air in Ha Giang to humid bays in Halong. Bring layers, including a light jacket, raincoat, and breathable clothes. Comfortable hiking shoes or trekking sandals are a must, especially for Ha Giang, Dong Van, and Ba Be.

🧳 2. Pack light but don’t forget the essentials

Sunscreen, bug spray, flashlight, reusable water bottle, quick-dry towel, and a basic first-aid kit are key. A power bank is useful for long travel days.

🌤️ 3. Check the weather & time your trip right

Best time to visit is March - May and September - November: cool, dry, and clear views. Avoid heavy rains in July - August if you want to trek or ride safely in the mountains.

📷 4. Ask before taking photos

Many ethnic minority communities are modest and value privacy. Always ask for permission before photographing people, especially elders or spiritual sites. Sometimes, a friendly gesture or showing them the photo afterward makes for a better experience.

📸 5. Bring a good camera or phone with night mode

Northern Vietnam is a photographer’s dream: misty valleys, rice terraces, ethnic costumes, and dramatic limestone formations. Night photography in remote areas can capture star-filled skies, but you’ll need a tripod or night mode setting.

🪙 6. Tipping is not mandatory, but always appreciated

There’s no strict tipping culture, but small tips for drivers, guides, and hosts are welcomed if you feel they went above and beyond. For homestays, leaving a note or a small thank-you gift is also a kind gesture.

These tips will help make your 10-day journey through Northern Vietnam not only smooth and enjoyable, but also rich in discovery, authentic connection, and lasting memories.

When planning a MICE trip to Vietnam for my team, Hanoi would be one of my first choices. As a team manager, I want more than just a suitable venue for meetings.
