II. Detailed itinerary for our 6 days in Lai Chau Dien Bien Son La

1. Day 1-2: Discovering Lai Chau province

The first stop of our Northwest Vietnam in 6 days journey was the poetic Love Waterfall, located about 30 km from Lai Chau city center. While admiring the romantic scenery of the white waterfall flowing through the lush forest, we also heard a fascinating folk legend about the love story between a fairy and a woodcutter, also the origin of the waterfall’s name. Don’t forget to try some specialties of Lai Chau at the foot of the waterfall, such as bamboo-tube rice and grilled skewered meat, and we highly recommend them. After that, we continued our journey to the town center, passing through the famous O Quy Ho Pass, one of the highest and most scenic mountain passes in Vietnam.

In the afternoon, we returned to the center of Lai Chau town, a place known for the cultural diversity of various ethnic minority groups in Vietnam such as the Thai, Hmong, and Giay people. One of the best places to experience this richness is the local market. We spent the afternoon strolling around the town center and Lai Chau central market, where a wide range of medicinal herbs, fruits, and local specialties are sold. On the second day, we headed to Sin Ho Plateau, often considered the “roof” of Lai Chau, so visiting this region is definitely one of the best things to do in Lai Chau. If you prefer to avoid the crowds of Sapa, this is a less touristy and more authentic alternative, still offering breathtaking terraced rice fields and encounters with ethnic minorities. We also stopped at Nam Luc waterfall, a lesser-known spot among international travelers but definitely worth visiting. We then continued straight to Dien Bien, where we spent our second night, preparing for more cultural experiences in the next days of our Northwest Vietnam tour 6 days.

2. Day 3-4: Memorable cultural experiences in Dien Bien

We started day 3 of our trip to Lai Chau Dien Bien Son La 6 days by visiting the Dien Bien Phu Museum and A1 Hill, important historical sites of Vietnam during the struggle for independence from French colonialism. In the afternoon, we cycled around Muong Thanh rice field, one of the largest rice fields in Northwest Vietnam. We enjoyed local specialties such as smoked meat and grilled com lam (bamboo-cooked sticky rice), joined traditional performances, drank local rice wine, gathered around a campfire, and talked with local people. That evening was incredibly warm and convivial, and the hospitality of Vietnamese people left us with unforgettable memories.

The next morning, we visited Pa Khoang Lake. The calm water surrounded by lush mountains creates a truly poetic landscape. We tried boating, exploring small islands, and enjoying a rare sense of tranquility. In winter, the lake is covered with mist like an ink painting. We visited in early summer, when the clear water reflected the sky and mountains beautifully. We also hiked through the forest and visited Thai villages, where locals were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Leaving Pa Khoang Lake, we continued our journey by passing the Pha Din Pass, a historic mountain pass with spectacular curves. By the afternoon, we arrived in Moc Chau, Son La province, where we spent the night, ending day 4 of our Northern Vietnam itinerary on a memorable note.

2. Day 5-6: Spectacular natural landscapes of Moc Chau and Ta Xua

After several days of traveling, we spent the last two days of our trip to Lai Chau Dien Bien Son La 6 days relaxing and exploring at a slower pace. That’s why Moc Chau was the perfect choice, with its stunning natural scenery. The white cascading water in the middle of the mountains creates a truly poetic landscape. After that, we visited Ban Ang Pine Forest, a peaceful and romantic spot, perfect for a relaxing walk. In the evening, the cool weather in Moc Chau was ideal for enjoying a barbecue and hotpot outdoors while chatting together.

The last day of our itinerary 6 days in Northwest Vietnam took us to Ta Xua, a destination known among young Vietnamese as a perfect “cloud hunting” spot. Our first stop was Hang Tau, a Hmong village almost completely isolated from the outside world. With no electricity or phone signal, the place offers a rare sense of authenticity. Only the sounds of wind, livestock, and nature surround you, creating a peaceful and truly healing atmosphere.

We then checked in at Dolphin Cliff and the Lonely Tree of Ta Xua, both famous for their breathtaking mountain views. In the afternoon, we stopped at a small café to admire the sea of clouds and watch the sunset slowly paint the sky in shades of orange. That moment made us feel absolutely certain that choosing Moc Chau, Son La was one of the best decisions of our Northwest Vietnam tour.

III. Tips for those planning a circuit in Northwest Vietnam

If you are planning a Northern Vietnam tour, especially a trip to Lai Chau Dien Bien Son La 6 days, we would like to share some practical advice based on our own experience. First of all, if you are more fascinated by lively cities or sunny beaches, you might want to reconsider, as this itinerary is more suitable for nature lovers seeking a more authentic cultural experience.

Secondly, the best time to enjoy a Northwest Vietnam tour is from September to April, when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. However, each season has its own charm, such as the golden rice harvest in Dien Bien or the cloud-hunting season in Ta Xua.

In addition, you should bring warm clothes, comfortable walking shoes, and essential personal items, as the temperature difference between day and night in the northern mountains can be quite significant. You will also be quite active during the trip, so good shoes are essential. Don’t forget to carry cash, as many remote areas and villages do not accept electronic payments.

Finally, take time to talk with local people. These simple interactions made our 6-day itinerary to Lai Chau Dien Bien Son La much more meaningful and memorable.
