So, what to do in Lai Chau? The next day, we visited the Sin Ho plateau, known as the “roof” of Lai Chau. Located at an altitude of around 1,500 meters, the climate here is cool all year round. The road is quite winding, but in return, we were rewarded with spectacular landscapes of endless mountains. What impressed me most in Sin Ho was not only the scenery but also the rich cultural life of the Hmong, Dao, and Thai ethnic groups. Each community has its own traditional costumes, lifestyle, and unique cultural identity, so visiting these minority villages is truly a must-do when traveling to Lai Chau. Everything still feels authentic and untouched, not commercialized.
On the way back, we stopped at Nam Luc waterfall, a majestic cascade hidden in the forest. With a height of over 140 meters and three different levels, its beauty, both poetic and powerful, blends perfectly with the surrounding greenery. It is a place I would highly recommend for nature lovers during your Northern Vietnam tour.
On the morning of day three in our 4-day Lai Chau Dien Bien itinerary, we left Lai Chau for Dien Bien. At noon, we arrived at Phieng Loi cultural village, a Thai ethnic minority village, also one of the most beautiful ethnic villages in Dien Bien. This was one of our favorite places, and spending a full day there to discover their way of life and interact directly with the locals made us feel truly alive. The village is surrounded by nature, located along the peaceful Nam Rom river, with traditional stilt houses standing close to each other.
We explored the village by bicycle, learning about their homes and daily life, which revolves around agriculture and traditional crafts such as embroidery and weaving. What impressed us the most was being able to join the locals in preparing and cooking traditional Northwest dishes. All the ingredients, from meat, fish, to vegetables, are locally sourced and prepared following traditional Thai methods.
In the evening, we not only enjoyed these delicious dishes but also drank their traditional homemade alcohol, joined a campfire, listened to folk songs, and watched bamboo dances. The atmosphere was warm, lively, and deeply connecting. Despite the language barrier, nothing stopped us from sharing laughter, music, and dance. It was one of the most memorable moments, not only during our trip to Lai Chau Dien Bien 4 days but throughout our entire journey in Vietnam.

If you are wondering what to do in Dien Bien, you definitely should not miss exploring its famous historical sites. On the last day, we spent time visiting key landmarks such as the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum, A1 Hill, and the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument, all of which played an important role in Vietnam’s resistance against French colonialism. Thanks to the guide’s explanations, we gained a deeper understanding of their struggle for independence, as well as the strong sense of national pride we had heard about before.
In the afternoon, we cycled around Muong Thanh Valley, the largest rice field in Northwest Vietnam. The vast, peaceful landscape with endless rice paddies created a truly relaxing atmosphere. The dry conditions also make it easier to explore and enjoy outdoor activities. In addition, bring warm clothes and good walking shoes, as the mountainous terrain can be challenging. I strongly recommend hiring a private car with a driver for safety, as the winding mountain roads are not easy to navigate.
You should also carry cash, as some places, especially local markets, small restaurants, and ethnic villages, do not accept card payments. Finally, even if you do not stay overnight, try to visit at least one ethnic village. Their unique culture and warm hospitality will leave a lasting impression.
