By late morning the mist would lift, revealing vibrant rice paddies and mountains fading into shades of green and blue. Occasionally a short tropical shower would sweep through, freshening the air and leaving shimmering droplets on the palm leaves.

The staff were kind and eager to help us arrange transport and guides.

Sleeping under a mosquito net in a wooden house, hearing the crickets and the soft murmur of the river below, we felt part of another rhythm of life. Our hosts taught us how to toast with rice wine, always with eye contact and a smile.
