Remarks On A 6-day Trip To Cao Bang Ha Giang And Sapa By Mr. Radley

1. Day 1: Hanoi - Cao Bang - Phia Thap incense village

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a private car transfer from Hanoi to Cao Bang province. After a few hours of driving, you will stop in a town around noon for lunch before continuing your journey to Phia Thap incense village , famous for its local incense craftsmanship. Along the way, you will also have the opportunity to visit Phuc Sen village, known for its production of knives and tools, and Dia Tren village, where traditional paper is made. Depending on time, you may visit one of these villages the following morning.
Visit Dia Tren village - the paper-making village of the Nùng An in Cao Bang
Once you reach Phia Thap village, you can take a stroll through the village and watch the artisans making incense sticks, a process that is passed down through generations. Visitors can also try their hand at making incense or learn about the different types of incense used in spiritual ceremonies. The village’s traditional architecture is a great photo opportunity, and you can engage with the locals to learn more about their way of life.

Upon arrival in Phia Thap, you will check in at a local homestay. This village is deeply immersed in the incense-making process, with nearly every household having its own workshop. You’ll have the chance to observe the entire production cycle, from raw materials to the finished product. Afterward, enjoy a peaceful evening with a traditional dinner at the homestay, where you can interact with the hosts and learn about local cuisine and customs.

2. Day 2: Phia Thap village - Ban Gioc waterfall - Nguom Ngao cave - Khuoi Ky

After breakfast, bid farewell to your hosts and head to Trung Khanh District, where you’ll discover one of the Northern Vietnam’s gems: Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest waterfall in the country. En route, you’ll stop at the Sunday market in Trung Khanh (if it’s a Sunday), where you can sample local specialties such as grilled meats, sticky rice, and fresh fruits. You can also observe the lively market atmosphere and shop for unique handmade goods.

The surrounding nature offers beautiful walking trails and an ideal environment for a picnic by the river.

After visiting the waterfall, enjoy a lunch in a nearby homestay to recharge. In the afternoon, you will visit the impressive Nguom Ngao Cave, also known as the Tiger Cave, renowned for its surprising rock formations. The cave tour allows visitors to explore the fascinating stalactites and stalagmites inside, which have been formed over thousands of years.

The rest of the day is free for you to relax and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty at your own pace.

4. Day 4: Meo Vac - Dong Van - Lung Cu Tower - Ma Le - Mao Xa

Explore the Ha Giang Loop
After breakfast, meet your driver and embark on a scenic journey to explore the Ha Giang Loop, known for its unique and spectacular landscapes. You’ll begin with a boat ride on the Nho Que River, passing through the Tu San Gorge, the deepest canyon in Vietnam and Southeast Asia (700-800 meters deep). During the boat trip, visitors can enjoy the serenity of the river, taking in the lush hills and dramatic cliffs that surround the area. The journey also offers ample opportunities for photography, especially with the canyon's rugged beauty.

A walk along the Skywalk, a narrow trail carved into the mountain’s side, provides even more breathtaking vistas. Visitors can marvel at the surrounding valley, with its terraced fields and steep cliffs, and take in the fresh mountain air.

Afterward, you will arrive in Dong Van for a lunch break. You can also explore the small town, visit the ancient stone buildings, and chat with the locals to learn about their traditions and lifestyle. In the afternoon, you will visit the isolated village of Thien Huong, accessible only by motorbike or on foot. Here, you can engage with the village's inhabitants and observe their daily life, which remains largely untouched by modern developments.
Lung Cu Tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam
You will then continue to Lung Cu Tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam. From the top of the tower, enjoy panoramic views of the northern Vietnamese landscape and China to the north. Visitors can climb the stairs of the tower for an unforgettable 360-degree view. If time permits, you can also visit the village of Ma Le, known for its ancient traditional houses, and explore the narrow lanes of this historical settlement.

The day ends back at Lao Xa, where you’ll check in and enjoy a traditional dinner at your homestay.

A 2-day farm tour in Vietnam for an insight into everyday rural life

To discover Vietnam from a different perspective, I chose a 2-day Vietnam farm tour, far from the usual tourist routes. My goal was simple: to leave the big cities behind, understand the daily life of local farmers, and take part in activities I had never experienced before. Rather than moving from one monument or guided tour to another, I wanted to slow down, observe, learn, and connect with local people. With the help of a local travel agency in Hanoi, I was able to plan an experience centered around rural life, traditional farming practices, and shared meals with local families. Here is what I took away from these two days.

A 2-week trip through Northern and Central Vietnam, with plenty of experiences without rushing

I’ve just returned from 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam, and I’m left with the feeling that I discovered several different sides of the country without spending most of my time on the road. Before leaving, I was mainly looking for a varied itinerary combining major cultural sites, beautiful scenery, and enough free time to enjoy each destination at my own pace. From Hanoi to Hoi An, with stops in Ninh Binh, Lan Ha Bay, and Hue, each place had its own atmosphere and experiences to offer. Here is my personal feedback on this 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam trip, including the moments that stayed with me and a few tips I would give another traveler today. Organizing the trip with a local travel agency in Hanoi also gave me greater peace of mind throughout the journey.
