During my 2-day itinerary in Cao Bang, organized by Vietnam travel agency Autour Asia, I was amazed by the majestic landscapes of northern Vietnam. From the Ban Gioc waterfall (rightfully known as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Vietnam) to the Nguom Ngao cave, a fascinating underground network with impressive limestone formations, every stop left me with unforgettable memories.
However, with limited time, I found that Cao Bang deserves at least a 4-day stay to appreciate it fully. That said, this short tour was perfectly organized, and for those who wish to discover Cao Bang in just 2 days, it is doable!
Cao Bang 2-day travel itinerary:
I left Hanoi at dawn, ready for a long journey to Cao Bang for a 2-day trip. The drive allowed me to admire the changing landscapes, from lush plains to towering mountains.
We stopped for lunch at a local restaurant. The guide informed us that we hadn’t yet arrived in Cao Bang. It was only in the early afternoon that we finally entered the Cao Bang province. After several hours, I caught my first glimpse of the magnificent terrain of the region.
My first must-see stop was the famous Ban Gioc Waterfall. With its roaring waters cascading down the cliffs, this waterfall at the border between Vietnam and China is breathtaking. The Ban Gioc waterfall is majestic, standing over 50 meters tall, split into 3 levels. I was pleasantly surprised and recognized that it truly deserves its place among the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.
The Cao Bang 2-day itinerary then took me to the Nguom Ngao Cave, locally known as the "Tiger Cave." To reach it, we had a short hike, followed by an exploration of the cave, which stretches nearly 2 kilometers. This vast and mysterious cave is filled with stalactites and stalagmites sculpted by time. The atmosphere inside was peaceful, almost mystical.
After visiting the cave, the night began to fall. We headed back to the hotel near Ban Gioc Waterfall. My friends and I enjoyed a stroll through the small town and sampled some local street food specialties. I love discovering new flavors, and I was particularly curious to try pho chua in Cao Bang, a sour soup that offers a unique taste, different from other pho bowls I’ve had in Hanoi. My friend wanted to try the ant egg cakes, but we didn’t get the chance to taste them.
For dinner, we ate at a local restaurant. The dishes were mostly made with ingredients grown or raised locally, giving them a fresh, authentic flavor. My favorite dish was the roasted suckling pig, a must-try that I highly recommend to anyone visiting Cao Bang.
After this long day, we returned to the hotel to rest early, enjoying the fresh air before falling into a restful sleep. Thus ended the first day of my 2-day trip to Cao Bang.
On the second day in Cao Bang, I woke up early and returned to the Ban Gioc waterfall, this time to enjoy the morning serenity. The place was even more peaceful, bathed in soft light.
Next, we checked out of our hotel and headed to explore Thung Mountain. Located near Thang Hen Lake, this mountain offers a poetic landscape, surrounded by lush meadows, a vast lake, and majestic limestone mountains. It is also called the "Divine Eye" mountain due to its unique shape: a wide circular opening that allows one to admire the blue sky through it or watch the rays of sunlight gently filtering through the mountain. This feature creates a truly spectacular natural setting.
This was my final stop on the 2-day itinerary in Cao Bang. I had my last meal in the region before heading back to Hanoi, where I arrived around 9 PM.
Though brief, this Cao Bang 2-day trip was a breath of fresh air. I returned with unforgettable memories and a desire to return to explore more of this incredible region.
During my trip in November, the weather in Cao Bang 2 days surprised me with its freshness and beauty. The weather at that time was generally cool, which was a real relief after the humid heat of the southern regions of Vietnam.
In the morning, a light mist enveloped the mountains, creating a mystical atmosphere perfect for exploring the landscapes of Cao Bang. The evenings, on the other hand, became chilly, and a light sweater or jacket was essential to warm up, especially in the mountainous areas.
