I. Overview of the Quan Ba Twin Mountain - Fairy Mountain

  • Location: Tam Son Town, Quan Ba District, Ha Giang Province, Vietnam

The Quan Ba Twin Mountain (Vietnamese name: Núi Đôi Quản Bạ), also known as the Fairy Mountain (Núi Đôi Cô Tiên), is located southwest of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, nearly 50 km north of Ha Giang city center. The locals call this “Twin Mountain” because there are two parallel mountains standing out amid the surrounding limestone ranges and rice terraces.

The formation of these mountains is due to the erosion of dolomite, a common rock on the Dong Van karst plateau. Over thousands of years, natural forces gradually shaped the Quan Ba Twin Mountain into their current form. The Quan Ba Twin Mountain has a rather rounded shape, unlike the sharp peaks of the neighboring mountains, evoking the image of a fairy resting in a vast valley.
In 2010, the Quan Ba Twin Mountain was recognized as a national scenic site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam.

II. The legend of the Quan Ba Twin Mountain

There is a very touching legend about the Quan Ba Twin Mountain in Ha Giang. Once upon a time, there was a handsome and talented young H’mong man who was especially gifted at playing the flute.

The sound of his flute was compared to the singing of birds, resonating throughout the forest and deeply touching the Cherry Blossom Fairy (Vietnamese name: Hoa Đào). She was known among humans as the most beautiful of the heavenly fairies. The Cherry Blossom Fairy found a way to descend to earth and married the Hmong man. After a year together, she gave birth to an adorable boy.

However, their marriage was forbidden by the Jade Emperor. The Cherry Blossom Fairy was taken back to the sky to be punished. Out of love for her newborn child, she left her breast on earth to nourish her son. Her breast later transformed into the twin mountains located in the Quan Ba valley.
