Review Of Hubert About 2 Weeks In Central And North Vietnam

A 2-week trip through Northern and Central Vietnam, with plenty of experiences without rushing

I’ve just returned from 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam, and I’m left with the feeling that I discovered several different sides of the country without spending most of my time on the road. Before leaving, I was mainly looking for a varied itinerary combining major cultural sites, beautiful scenery, and enough free time to enjoy each destination at my own pace. From Hanoi to Hoi An, with stops in Ninh Binh, Lan Ha Bay, and Hue, each place had its own atmosphere and experiences to offer. Here is my personal feedback on this 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam trip, including the moments that stayed with me and a few tips I would give another traveler today. Organizing the trip with a local travel agency in Hanoi also gave me greater peace of mind throughout the journey.

I. Why I chose to explore North and Central Vietnam in 2 weeks

For my first trip, I didn’t want to try to see the whole of Vietnam in just 14 days. The country is vast, and the distances between destinations can quickly turn a trip into a series of transfers. So, I decided to focus on the North and Central regions, two parts of the country that offer quite different experiences.

The North appealed to me because of Hanoi, the landscapes of Ninh Binh, and the chance to explore the bay. In Central Vietnam, I could continue my journey with the imperial history of Hue and the charming atmosphere of Hoi An.

Looking back, this choice suited me well. I had enough time to discover each destination without trying to fill every day with activities.

Two weeks, five destinations, and so many memories

II. My 2-week North and Central Vietnam itinerary

1. Days 1 to 3: Hanoi, my first steps in Vietnam

I started my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam in Hanoi, and within the first few hours, I was immediately immersed in a completely different atmosphere. The traffic is busy, the streets are full of life, and every neighborhood seems to have its own rhythm. At first, it takes a few hours to get used to it, but you soon find yourself naturally moving through the hustle and bustle.

I spent much of my first three days exploring the Old Quarter. Between the small shops, cafés, and street vendors, I mostly let my curiosity guide me. Street food also played an important part in my experience: pho, bun cha, Vietnamese coffee… I enjoyed being able to stop at a small local spot without necessarily having planned the meal in advance.

In the evening, a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake offered a chance to enjoy a quieter atmosphere.

My favorite local dish: Hanoi’s bun cha

2. Days 4 to 5: Ninh Binh, a change of scenery

After the lively atmosphere of Hanoi, arriving in Ninh Binh felt like stepping into a completely different setting. The journey from the capital is relatively straightforward, and the scenery quickly becomes more open and peaceful.

I chose to take a boat trip in Trang An. Gliding between the limestone formations, passing through caves, and taking in the scenery from the water was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam.

I also appreciated being able to explore the surrounding area at a more relaxed pace. This stop gave me some time to slow down and recharge before continuing my journey.

Boat trip duration: around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the route chosen. The price is VND 300,000 per person for a shared boat of up to 4 people.

3. Days 6 to 7: a peaceful break in Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay was one of the stops I was particularly looking forward to. I joined a two-day cruise with one night on board. The change of pace was a welcome one: once I was on the boat, I no longer had to think about the next journey or transfer.

Kayaking allowed me to get closer to the scenery and enjoy a much quieter environment. The meals served on board were also part of the experience. But my favorite moment was definitely sunrise. Being out on the deck early in the morning, while the bay was still quiet, is one of the memories I remember most from my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam trip.

4. Days 8 to 10: Hue, following in the footsteps of the Emperors

After exploring the North, I flew to Central Vietnam so I wouldn’t lose too much time on the road. Hue offered me a completely different experience.

I visited the Imperial City, followed by several royal tombs. What I appreciated most was the contrast with the first stops on my itinerary: after the natural landscapes and lively atmosphere of Hanoi, the journey took on a more historical dimension.

I also used this stop as an opportunity to try several Hue specialties. The local cuisine really deserves some time, especially the small dishes served in several portions.

5. Days 11 to 13: Hoi An, my last days in Central Vietnam

I ended the sightseeing part of my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam in Hoi An. The Old Town is particularly enjoyable to explore on foot, especially towards the end of the day when the streets become quieter and the lanterns start to light up.

I also took some time to venture beyond the historic center. A bicycle ride through the countryside offered a chance to discover another side of the region, away from the busiest streets.

I also joined a cooking class. It was a fun and hands-on way to discover local ingredients and some of the techniques used in everyday Vietnamese cooking. After several days of sightseeing, I particularly enjoyed these more interactive activities.

If you have enough time in Hoi An, consider having an outfit made to measure. From choosing the fabrics and taking your measurements to the fittings, the experience is almost as interesting as the final result.

6. Day 14: return to Hanoi and the end of my trip

To finish my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam, I took a flight from Da Nang to Hanoi. The schedule for the final day obviously depends on the time of your international flight. In my case, I kept a few hours free to enjoy the capital one last time and pick up a few souvenirs before leaving.

What I particularly enjoyed about this trip :

What stood out to me most was the diversity of landscapes I experienced in just two weeks. From the streets of Hanoi and the limestone formations of Ninh Binh to the islands and islets of Lan Ha Bay and the historic cities of Central Vietnam, I never felt like I was having the same experience twice.

I also appreciated the balance between busy sightseeing days and quieter moments. The cruise, bicycle rides, and evenings in Hoi An added a different rhythm to the cultural visits.

If I had to pick a few specific memories, I would remember the boat trip in Ninh Binh, sunrise over Lan Ha Bay, the streets of Hoi An’s Old Town, and the many meals I discovered along the way.

What I would do again on a future trip:

If I returned to Vietnam, I would keep the idea of limiting the number of regions visited. For a two-week trip, I think it is better to explore a few destinations in greater depth rather than trying to see everything.

I would also allow more free time in Hoi An and Hanoi. Some of my best discoveries actually came from moments that weren’t planned in advance.

III. My tips after 2 weeks of traveling in North and Central Vietnam

After my trip, here are a few tips I would give anyone planning their own 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam:

  • Limit the number of stops: Two weeks go by quickly. I preferred spending several days in each destination rather than constantly moving from one place to another.

  • Consider the season: The weather can vary between Northern and Central Vietnam. Check temperatures and the likelihood of rain before finalizing your itinerary.

  • Allow enough time for transportation: A journey can easily take half a day. Try to keep your schedule lighter after longer transfers.

  • Combine different modes of transportation: Flying is convenient when you want to save time between regions. For shorter journeys, traveling by private car with a driver or by train can be worthwhile.

  • Travel light: A suitcase that is easy to carry makes hotel changes and transfers much simpler.

  • Pack suitable clothing: Choose lightweight clothes, along with a thin jacket for cooler mornings and air-conditioned journeys. Comfortable walking shoes are also useful.

  • Keep some Vietnamese dong with you: Cash is still convenient for small restaurants, markets, cafés, and everyday purchases.

  • Book important activities in advance: For a cruise in Lan Ha Bay or certain excursions, it is better to plan ahead, especially during busy periods.

  • Leave some free time: Don’t fill every day with activities. A spontaneous walk, a coffee break, or a market you happen to discover can also become part of the journey.

  • Plan your return: If your international flight departs from Hanoi, allow enough time to travel back to the capital from Central Vietnam.

IV. Why I enjoyed traveling with a Vietnam travel agency

For my 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam, I appreciated being able to focus on discovering the country without spending too much time organizing every detail myself. The transfers between Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Lan Ha Bay, and Central Vietnam were arranged in advance, along with the accommodation and main activities.

I was also able to discuss my preferences and adjust the itinerary before departure, particularly to find a good balance between sightseeing and free time. Getting in touch with Autour Asia - a local travel agency in Hanoi also gave me practical advice on transportation, excursions, and local customs.

For me, this support mainly made the trip simpler and more relaxing throughout my stay.

My guide’s explanations helped me better understand Vietnam’s imperial history

Looking back on my trip, I have very fond memories of these two weeks in Northern and Central Vietnam. This 2 weeks in Central and North Vietnam itinerary allowed me to discover a wide variety of landscapes, taste different regional cuisines, and, above all, take the time to enjoy each destination. I particularly enjoyed the balance between sightseeing, activities, and free time. Having the support of a local travel agency in Hanoi also made it easier to organize my trip without getting overwhelmed by all the bookings and arrangements. If I were to return to Vietnam, I would keep this itinerary, perhaps with a few extra days in Hoi An.

How to get around between Northern and Central Vietnam?

For a Vietnam itinerary 2 weeks, flying remains the most convenient way to travel quickly between the North and Central regions of the country. From Hanoi, several flights connect the capital with destinations such as Hue or Da Nang, depending on the itinerary you choose. The train is another option, particularly appealing if you would like to enjoy the scenery along the way, but it takes considerably longer. For shorter journeys, a private car with a driver offers greater flexibility and allows you to stop along the way. Overall, it is best to combine different modes of transportation rather than relying on a single option throughout your trip.

How much does a 2-week trip to Vietnam cost for two people?

The Vietnam trip cost for two people over two weeks mainly depends on your choice of accommodation, transportation, and activities. For a comfortable trip, you can generally expect to spend around $1,600 to $2,700 for two people, excluding international flights. This budget may cover mid-range hotels, meals, domestic transportation, and several excursions. However, a two-day cruise in Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay can increase the overall cost. On the other hand, using local transportation and choosing simpler accommodation can help keep expenses down. It is also worth setting aside some extra money for souvenirs and personal purchases.

What to eat in Northern and Central Vietnam?

During a trip through Northern and Central Vietnam, several local specialties deserve a place in your food diary. The Hanoi street food scene is a great place to start, with Hanoi’s most famous dishes including pho, bun cha, and egg coffee, all easy to discover at small local eateries around the capital. In Ninh Binh, try com chay, a crispy rice dish, along with local goat meat. In Hue, bun bo Hue, banh beo, and banh nam offer a chance to discover a diverse and refined local cuisine. Finally, Hoi An is known for cao lau and banh mi, making for a delicious way to end this culinary journey.
