5 days in Kanchanaburi: what to do and what to see?
Are you planning a 5-day trip to Kanchanaburi, Thailand? Wondering if 5 days is enough to explore this fascinating destination? My friends and I had the chance to spend 5 days discovering Kanchanaburi’s iconic landmarks, such as the Bridge on the River Kwai, the Death Railway, and conquering the breathtaking seven-tiered Erawan Waterfall. If you’re looking for a journey filled with unforgettable experiences and emotions, Kanchanaburi is a destination you simply can’t miss! Here, I’ll share a detailed 5-day itinerary in Kanchanaburi, hoping to help you make the most of your time in this incredible place!

I. Overview of 5 days in Kanchanaburi

We embarked on a 5-day trip to Kanchanaburi, booked through Autour Asia, a reputable Thailand travel agency known for its well-organized tours and knowledgeable guides. The experience offered the perfect balance of history, nature, and adventure. The weather in Kanchanaburi in 5 days was ideal, with mild temperatures and clear skies, making it an excellent time to explore the region’s scenic landscapes and outdoor activities.

II. How to spend 5 days in Kanchanaburi?

1. Why visit Kanchanaburi for 5 days?

Kanchanaburi Thailand
We wanted to deeply discover Kanchanaburi’s rich history, nature, and cultural heritage over a span of five days. Traveling with a small group of friends from France, our goal was to explore a different side of Asia beyond the typical tourist attractions. Kanchanaburi offered us a mix of historical sites like the Bridge on the River Kwai and Death Railway, as well as natural wonders like Erawan Waterfall and Sai Yok Hot Springs.
5 days allowed us enough time to visit all the best things to do in Kanchanaburi, without feeling rushed. Whether it was hiking, relaxing in hot springs, or learning about Thailand’s WWII history, we found this trip perfectly tailored for adventure and discovery.

2. When to go to Kanchanaburi?

Kanchanaburi is best visited between November and February, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for outdoor exploration. This period offers clear skies, lower humidity, and temperatures ranging between 20°C to 28°C, making it ideal for hiking, swimming at waterfalls, and visiting cultural landmarks.

We traveled in early February, and the weather in 5 days in Kanchanaburi was excellent- sunny with a light breeze and no rain. These conditions made it easy to fully enjoy all the outdoor activities, from bamboo rafting to hiking up the seven tiers of Erawan Waterfall.

3. How to get to Kanchanaburi?

How to get to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok?
There are several ways to reach Kanchanaburi from Bangkok, including car, bus, and train. We chose to travel by train, which was a scenic and culturally immersive experience. The train departs from Bangkok’s Thonburi Station and offers a unique journey, passing through lush countryside and crossing over the historic River Kwai Bridge.
Traveling by train allowed us to relax and take in the views while avoiding Bangkok’s notorious traffic. It’s also an affordable option, giving you a taste of Thailand’s rail travel. Autour Asia helped us arrange the tickets, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

4. Where to stay in Kanchanaburi?

Kanchanaburi offers a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets, from luxury riverside resorts to cozy boutique hotels. Since we were traveling in a group, we opted for a mid-range resort near the River Kwai, which offered both comfort and proximity to major attractions. Our resort provided everything we needed, including excellent service, a relaxing atmosphere, and convenient access to places like the Bridge on the River Kwai and the Kanchanaburi Night Market. Autour Asia made sure the booking process was smooth, saving us the hassle of coordinating accommodations. With this setup, our group had the perfect base to explore Kanchanaburi over 5 days, making it one of the most memorable trips in our Asia travels.

III. What to do in Kanchanaburi in 5 days? Detailed itinerary of Kanchanaburi 5 days

1. Day 1: Arrival & Light exploration

What to do in Kanchanaburi in 5 days? Our group began the journey with a scenic train ride from Bangkok’s Thonburi Station to Kanchanaburi. The ride took nearly three hours, giving us plenty of time to admire the peaceful countryside and get a taste of Thailand’s rural beauty. Along the way, we crossed the historic Bridge on the River Kwai, offering a preview of one of the key highlights in our 5 days in Kanchanaburi itinerary. Traveling by train added a unique and relaxed start to our adventure. With Autour Asia handling all the arrangements, everything went smoothly, making the trip hassle-free.
Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple) in Kanchanaburi
After checking in at a riverside resort, we kicked off our 5 days in Kanchanaburi itinerary with a visit to Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple), known for its massive golden Buddha statue and panoramic views. Next, we explored Wat Ban Tham, famous for its dragon-shaped entrance leading into mystical cave chambers. Both temples offered insights into the region’s rich culture and spiritual heritage. The evening ended with dinner at a riverside restaurant and a stroll through the lively Kanchanaburi Night Market, where we tasted local street food and shopped for souvenirs. It was the perfect introduction to one of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi.

2. Day 2: WWII History, Death railway & bamboo rafting

Bridge on the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi
On the second day of our Kanchanaburi 5 days itinerary, we delved into the region’s WWII history. The JEATH War Museum and Kanchanaburi War Cemetery offered a sobering reminder of the hardships faced by prisoners of war during the construction of the Death Railway. Walking across the Bridge on the River Kwai, a must-see landmark, was an unforgettable experience. Our guide shared stories about the bridge’s role in WWII, making the visit deeply meaningful.
In the afternoon, we explored Krasae Cave, located along a stunning curve of the railway. The view of the tracks suspended high above the river was awe-inspiring. One of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi is bamboo rafting, and we couldn’t wait to try it. Floating peacefully down the river, surrounded by lush greenery, was a relaxing contrast to the morning’s historical sites. With the Kanchanaburi 5 days weather being mild and pleasant, the entire day felt well-balanced and enjoyable.

3. Day 3: Erawan Waterfall & National Park Adventure

Erawan National Park, a top highlight on the list of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi
Day three was all about nature and adventure, which is central to any Kanchanaburi 5 days itinerary. We traveled to Erawan National Park, a top highlight on the list of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi. The park is famous for the Erawan Waterfall, which has seven tiers and crystal-clear pools. Hiking to all seven tiers was both challenging and rewarding, with each level offering stunning views and perfect spots to swim. We spent time taking photos and enjoying the natural beauty around us.
Afterward, we explored Phra That Cave, where stalactites and rock formations added a touch of mystery to the day. The mild Kanchanaburi 5 days weather made the hike comfortable, and by evening, we returned to our resort for a relaxing Thai massage. This day became one of our favorite moments during the trip.

4. Day 4: Hot Springs, Mallika Heritage Village & Local Exploration

Mallika village in Kanchanaburi
We started the fourth day with a rejuvenating soak at Sai Yok Hot Springs, where the warm, mineral-rich waters helped us unwind. It’s one of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi if you want to relax amid nature. Next, we visited Mallika Heritage Village, which offered a fascinating glimpse into life in early 20th-century Siam. We enjoyed walking through traditional homes and markets, trying on Thai costumes, and sampling local delicacies. The village provided a fun and immersive cultural experience.
In the afternoon, we visited the famous hundred-year-old rain tree, a massive tree with a canopy spreading over 15 meters. Sitting under its shade and enjoying the peaceful surroundings made for a perfect break. We also had the option to visit Sai Yok Noi waterfall, which is a popular stop for short nature walks. With the pleasant Kanchanaburi 5 days weather, this day felt perfectly paced for both relaxation and exploration.

5. Day 5: Elephant Sanctuary & Return to Bangkok

On the final day of our 5 days in Kanchanaburi itinerary, we visited an ethical elephant sanctuary. It was one of the most heartwarming and memorable experiences of the trip. We learned about elephant conservation, participated in feeding and bathing activities, and observed these majestic animals roaming freely. This visit was not only fun but also deeply educational, giving us a greater appreciation for wildlife protection efforts in Thailand.
After a satisfying lunch, we began our journey back to Bangkok. For those who hadn’t fully explored it earlier, Autour Asia offered an optional final stop at the Bridge on the River Kwai. Reflecting on the trip, we all agreed that we had experienced some of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi, from historical landmarks to breathtaking waterfalls and meaningful wildlife encounters. The consistently pleasant Kanchanaburi 5 days weather was another bonus, making outdoor activities comfortable and enjoyable.
This Kanchanaburi 5 days itinerary was flawlessly executed by Autour Asia. Their attention to detail, excellent accommodations, and knowledgeable guides ensured that every part of the trip ran smoothly. Traveling with friends made the experience even more memorable, and I would highly recommend this itinerary to anyone looking to fully explore Kanchanaburi’s rich history, nature, and culture.
