Solo Trip In Kanchanaburi - 3 Days In Kanchanaburi Of M. Dumas

The famous train of the River Kwai Bridge, highlight of a 3-day trip to Kanchanaburi

Hello to all young travellers who love solo adventures,

My name is Olivier, and I’ve just returned from a memorable trip to Thailand. For those who are planning a journey to this country and looking for a more unique experience, a solo trip to Kanchanaburi is definitely worth considering. Located not far from Bangkok, Kanchanaburi offers a perfect balance between nature, history, and cultural discovery. In this article, I share my personal experience of 3 days in Kanchanaburi, based on a 3-day Kanchanaburi travel itinerary that I followed as a solo traveller. This journey is designed for those wondering what to do in Kanchanaburi, while also seeking moments of calm and reflection when solo travelling in Thailand.

I. Why I chose a solo trip to Kanchanaburi?

I chose to spend 3 days in Kanchanaburi as part of my broader experience of solo travelling in Thailand, because this destination brings together everything I look for when travelling alone: nature, history, and tranquillity. Less crowded than Bangkok yet not isolated, Kanchanaburi allows solo travellers to move around easily, experience local life more deeply, and enjoy precious moments of solitude. For me, solo travelling in Kanchanaburi was an opportunity to slow down, observe, and truly listen.

The peaceful beauty of Kanchanaburi

Overall, my Kanchanaburi travel itinerary in 3 days was carefully balanced. The first day focused on major historical landmarks such as the JEATH War Museum, the Bridge over the River Kwai, and the War Cemetery, essential stops for anyone wondering what to do in Kanchanaburi. The second day was fully dedicated to nature, with visits to Erawan Waterfall and Sai Yok National Park, where I could fully immerse myself in the jungle, rivers, and mountains. The final day combined spirituality and historical memory, with stops at Wat Tham Sua and Hellfire Pass.

For me, a Kanchanaburi trip was much more than simple sightseeing. These three days brought a deep sense of freedom, calm, and a special connection to both nature and Thai history. It is a gentle yet meaningful journey, ideal for anyone looking for a safe and emotionally rich solo trip to Thailand.

II. My detailed 3-day trip to Kanchanaburi

1. Day 1: Discovering the historical side of Kanchanaburi

The first day of my 3 days in Kanchanaburi began with destinations deeply marked by history. Going on a solo trip in Kanchanaburi allowed me to visit historical sites at my own pace and spend as much time as I wanted to better understand the past of this region.

My first stop was the JEATH War Museum, which vividly recounts the tragic stories of prisoners of war during World War II. Through photographs, artifacts, and a modest exhibition space, the museum offers a powerful insight into the losses and sacrifices linked to the infamous Death Railway.

The JEATH War Museum was the first place I visited during my 3-day trip in Kanchanaburi

Just a few minutes’ walk from the JEATH Museum is the iconic Bridge over the River Kwai, a historical landmark featured in many novels and films around the world. That is exactly why I chose to take the train crossing this legendary bridge, one of the best things to do in Kanchanaburi. Watching the sunset reflect over the river was a peaceful and unforgettable moment, adding a poetic touch to this solo trip to Thailand, beyond its historical significance.

Another meaningful site I visited during my 3 day Kanchanaburi trip was the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, a memorial dedicated to soldiers who lost their lives during World War II. And if you are wondering what to eat in Kanchanaburi, don’t miss the local food scene at the Kanchanaburi night market. This lively market offers a wide variety of street food, souvenirs, and affordable clothing. And of course, traveling to Thailand without trying mango sticky rice would be a real mistake, add it to your must-try list whether you are traveling solo in Kanchanaburi or with friends and family.

Another tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi worth exploring is the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

2. Day 2: Immersed in the untouched nature of Kanchanaburi

As a traveler who enjoys solo travelling in Thailand for nature experiences, my 3 day Kanchanaburi itinerary naturally included outdoor adventures. Early in the morning, I headed to Erawan Waterfall, located about one hour from the city center. With its seven tiers cascading into emerald-green pools and winding through limestone formations, the waterfall offers a perfect blend of wilderness and relaxation, it certainly won’t disappoint.

The beauty of Erawan Waterfall is the reason for my solo trip to Kanchanaburi

For solo travelers, standing alone in such pristine nature, hiking and swimming in cool, clear water, truly hits different. It was a peaceful and healing moment, exactly what I seek during a solo trip in Kanchanaburi. After leaving Erawan, I continued my journey to Sai Yok National Park. Compared to Erawan, Sai Yok Waterfall is easier to access and just as picturesque. Besides admiring the lush forest scenery, visitors can kayak along the river to explore the surrounding caves and jungle landscapes.

Don’t miss the experience of admiring the surreal beauty of Sai Yok National Park

I brought some food for a simple picnic in the forest. Eating while listening to birdsong and the sounds of nature was one of the moments I appreciated most during my 3 days in Kanchanaburi. In the late afternoon, I changed the pace by choosing a local restaurant along the River Kwai, enjoying dinner while watching the sunset and discovering local cuisine during my solo trip to Thailand.

3. Day 3: Exploring Wat Tham Suea Temple and Hellfire Pass

Visiting Thailand, the land of temples, would not be complete without exploring its religious heritage. That is why I added a spiritual touch to my 3 days in Kanchanaburi itinerary. I visited Wat Tham Suea Temple, one of the most iconic temples in the region. From the top, I enjoyed a breathtaking panoramic view of Kanchanaburi, with vast green rice fields stretching into the distance and a winding river flowing peacefully below. The massive golden Buddha statue, standing out against the serene surroundings, creates a scene that is both sacred and spectacular.

Wat Tham Suea Temple is one of the must-visit destinations during a trip to Kanchanaburi

The final stop of my 3 day Kanchanaburi trip was Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, a powerful place where history and nature intertwine. I walked along the historic trail that once witnessed the construction of the Death Railway under extremely harsh conditions. Listening to the stories told in the museum while being surrounded by the silence of the forest made the experience deeply moving and unforgettable. This is truly one of the things to do in Kanchanaburi for solo travellers, especially for those interested in history.

As my journey came to an end, I realized that a solo trip in Kanchanaburi is actually a great advantage. I never felt lonely; on the contrary, this solo trip to Kanchanaburi offered me precious moments of inner peace, immersed in nature. Located just about three hours from Bangkok, the town feels completely different from Thailand’s bustling capital. Every moment here is a harmonious blend of nature and culture, allowing me to experience a truly unique and authentic side of Thailand.

III. Tips for a solo trip to Kanchanaburi and to Thailand

After completing my Kanchanaburi travel itinerary in 3 days, I gathered some useful tips for those planning a solo trip in Kanchanaburi or a family vacation in Kanchanaburi in general. Most attractions in Kanchanaburi are nature- or history-oriented, so if you are looking for vibrant festivals or lively beach parties, the slow pace of this destination might not suit your travel style. However, if you are travelling alone in Thailand in search of peace and reflection, Kanchanaburi is an emotionally rich destination worth considering.

Regarding transportation, I recommend renting a motorbike or a car if you are confident in driving. Otherwise, you can rely on a Thailand travel agency to assist you. Travelling solo in Kanchanaburi by motorbike or bicycle gives you more flexibility to reach places far from the city center, such as Erawan Waterfall or Hellfire Pass. That said, always prioritize safety and avoid travelling at night in remote areas.

E-scooters are a recommended means of transportation for those traveling solo in Kanchanaburi

Finally, when travelling alone in Kanchanaburi and Thailand, do not hesitate to talk to local people and ask for help when needed. In my experience, Kanchanaburi is very safe for solo travellers, including women. The locals’ friendliness and hospitality are what made my solo trip to Thailand truly warm and memorable.

A 3 days in Kanchanaburi solo trip offered me moments of quiet reflection along with truly meaningful experiences. From historical landmarks and stunning waterfalls to walking trails through pristine rainforest, each activity added depth and richness to my overall Kanchanaburi trip.

These experiences shaped a rewarding solo trip in Kanchanaburi, making it both immersive and personally fulfilling. If you are considering solo travelling in Thailand in a safe, meaningful, and unhurried way, this Kanchanaburi travel itinerary in 3 days is undoubtedly an ideal choice. However, if this is your first solo trip to Thailand, I strongly recommend working with a professional local travel agency in Thailand such as Autour Asia, which can help you plan a smooth and stress-free 3 day Kanchanaburi itinerary tailored for solo travellers.
