I. General introduction of Thailand and Thailand travel map
1. The geographical map of Thailand
Thailand, a jewel of Southeast Asia, spans an area of nearly 513,000 km². On the map of Thailand, you can see that it shares borders with Myanmar to the west and northwest, Laos to the north and east, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south. This strategic position makes Thailand an important cultural and commercial crossroads in the region, influencing where to go in Thailand.
The country benefits from privileged access to two seas: the Andaman Sea to the west and the Gulf of Thailand to the east, offering thousands of kilometers of coastline that delight beach and water sports enthusiasts on their trip to Thailand. This unique geographical configuration gives Thailand a great diversity of landscapes and ecosystems.
Looking closer at the map of Thailand, four major regions can be distinguished. In the north, a mountainous landscape dominates, with peaks reaching over 2,500 meters in altitude. The northeast, known as Isan, is distinguished by the vast Khorat Plateau. The central region, the economic heart of the country, is home to the capital Bangkok and extends over vast fertile plains traversed by the Chao Phraya River. Finally, the south forms a narrow peninsula, dotted with numerous paradise islands.
2. The Thailand travel map
The Thailand travel map reveals a country with multiple facets, offering a range of varied experiences to travelers planning their trip to Thailand. Bangkok, the bustling capital, stands out as the essential starting point for many itineraries. With its majestic temples, lively markets, and effervescent nightlife, it embodies the perfect blend of tradition and modernity.
When deciding where to go in Thailand, the north, specifically the Chiang Mai region and the famous Golden Triangle, captivates culture and nature enthusiasts. Ancient temples mingle with ethnic minority villages, all surrounded by verdant mountains. Further south, the white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Samui delight vacationers seeking relaxation and water sports.
For history buffs planning their Thailand travel map, the must-see sites of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, former capitals of the Kingdom of Siam, are essential. These vast historical parks, listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, testify to the richness of Thailand's past. To the west, the town of Kanchanaburi and its famous Bridge on the River Kwai recall darker episodes of history.
The map of Thailand is much more than a simple orientation tool for your trip to Thailand. It is an invitation to travel, revealing the richness and diversity of a country that continues to fascinate travelers from around the world. The Thailand travel map allows visualization of the country's main tourist infrastructures. The international airports of Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Krabi allow easy access to different regions when planning where to go in Thailand. The rail network, although less developed, efficiently connects major cities, while the road network allows exploration of the most remote corners of the country. Prepare to discover cultural wonders, breathtaking landscapes, and legendary hospitality on your trip to Thailand.
II. Thailand travel map: Best destinations for your trip to Thailand
The Kingdom of Thailand, with its impressive expanse, is brimming with fascinating attractions. For rushed travelers planning their trip to Thailand, selecting where to go in Thailand might seem like a daunting challenge. Rest assured! Our article will guide you through the essential tourist sites on your Thailand travel map, allowing you to have an unforgettable experience despite limited time.
Thailand, a country of a thousand facets, offers a journey through distinct regions, each with its own charm and iconic cities. From the mountainous north to the southern beaches, through the historic heart and rural plains of the east, each region on the map of Thailand tells a unique story of this fascinating country. Whether you're drawn to glittering temples, fine sandy beaches, lush jungle, or exotic cuisine, Thailand has something to offer every traveler.
1. Northern Thailand
When deciding where to go in Thailand, consider Northern Thailand, with its verdant mountains and rich Lanna culture, which captivates visitors with its serene beauty and preserved traditions. Chiang Mai, nicknamed the "Rose of the North," is its undisputed jewel on any Thailand travel map. Its golden temples, including the famous Wat Phra Singh, and lively night markets make it a popular destination for travelers seeking authenticity. Nearby, Chiang Rai impresses with its gleaming White Temple, Wat Rong Khun, a contemporary architectural marvel that contrasts with traditional temples. For those seeking a more bohemian atmosphere on their trip to Thailand, the small town of Pai, nestled in the mountains, offers a haven of peace with its hot springs and picturesque canyon.
At the heart of the country, central Thailand pulses to the rhythm of Bangkok, its effervescent capital and a key point on any map of Thailand. This vibrant metropolis harmoniously blends the old and the new, where futuristic skyscrapers stand alongside centuries-old temples like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. History enthusiasts planning where to go in Thailand won't miss visiting Ayutthaya, the former royal capital, whose majestic ruins testify to the past grandeur of the Kingdom of Siam. Further north, Sukhothai, cradle of Thai civilization, impresses with its UNESCO World Heritage historical park, offering a journey through time via its temples and ruined palaces.
3. Isan, the Authentic Region in the Northeast
Isan, the Northeastern region, remains an authentic land, less frequented by tourists but rich in traditions. On your Thailand travel map, note Nakhon Ratchasima, nicknamed Korat, which serves as the gateway to this region and houses the fascinating Phimai Historical Park, with its impressive Khmer temple. The cities of Khon Kaen and Udon Thani offer a glimpse into daily life in Isan, while Nong Khai, located on the banks of the Mekong, allows you to discover the border with Laos and its colorful Indochina market.
4. Eastern Thailand
Eastern Thailand, bordered by the Gulf of Thailand, offers a unique blend of popular beaches and preserved islands for your trip to Thailand. Pattaya, once a simple fishing village, has transformed into a lively seaside resort, known for its vibrant nightlife but also for more family-friendly attractions like the Sanctuary of Truth. Further south, Rayong serves as a starting point for the quiet island of Koh Samet, while Trat is the gateway to the Koh Chang archipelago, offering white sandy beaches and lush jungle.
5. Southern Thailand
When considering where to go in Thailand, the Southern region, with its postcard-perfect beaches and paradise islands, attracts visitors from around the world. Phuket, the country's largest island, enchants visitors with its fine sandy beaches, old town with Sino-Portuguese charm, and lively nightlife. On the opposite coast, Krabi amazes with its spectacular karst formations and secluded beaches like Railay. In the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui offers a mix of luxury and natural beauty, while its neighbor Koh Phangan is famous for its full moon parties. For those looking to get off the beaten path on their Thailand travel map, the Trang islands or the Koh Lipe archipelago in the far south offer preserved havens of peace.
Each region on the map of Thailand, with its iconic cities and hidden treasures, enriches the diversity and richness of this fascinating country. From golden temples to fine sandy beaches, from bustling markets to ancient ruins, Thailand offers a kaleidoscope of experiences that never fail to seduce visitors. This diversity, combined with legendary Thai hospitality, ensures that every trip to Thailand in the "Land of Smiles" is an unforgettable adventure, prompting many travelers to return again and again to discover new facets of this land of enchantment.
III. Thailand airport map and Thailand combination tours
The map of Thailand's airports not only reveals the country's excellent internal connectivity but also its potential as a hub for combination tours in Southeast Asia. This strategic airport infrastructure facilitates the creation of varied itineraries, allowing travelers to discover where to go in Thailand and its neighboring countries in a single trip.
At the heart of this Thailand travel map is Bangkok, the capital, equipped with two major international airports:
Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the largest and most modern in the country, serving as the main hub for international and domestic flights.
Don Mueang Airport, older but still very active, mainly used by low-cost airlines for domestic and regional flights.
When planning a trip to Thailand, consider the north, where Chiang Mai has an important international airport, a gateway to the mountains and Lanna culture. Further north, Chiang Rai also has an airport facilitating access to the Golden Triangle.
The South of the country, famous for its beaches and islands, is served by several key airports on the map of Thailand:
Phuket International Airport, the second busiest in the country after Bangkok.
Krabi Airport, offering direct access to the beaches of the Andaman Sea.
Koh Samui Airport, unique with its open tropical design, serving the islands of the Gulf of Thailand.
Other important regional airports to consider when deciding where to go in Thailand include Hat Yai in the far south, Udon Thani and Khon Kaen in the northeast (Isan), and U-Tapao near Pattaya, which is gaining importance in serving the east coast.
This well-developed airport infrastructure facilitates the creation of captivating combined circuits for your trip to Thailand. It thus becomes possible to mix the discovery of Bangkok's golden temples with the exploration of Angkor ruins in Cambodia, or to combine a trek in the mountains of northern Thailand with a cruise on Halong Bay in Vietnam. The options on your Thailand travel map are numerous and varied, allowing travelers to create tailor-made itineraries according to their interests and preferences for where to go in Thailand.
Thailand, with its cultural and natural diversity, offers a unique travel experience. To fully enjoy it, good preparation is essential. This section provides crucial information on three fundamental aspects of your journey: choosing the best time to visit each region, transportation options to explore the country efficiently, and tips for a safe trip.
1. Best time to visit each region in Thailand
The best time to visit Thailand varies by region. The North, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, is particularly pleasant from November to February, when the climate is cool and dry, ideal for trekking and cultural visits. Avoid the burning season in March and April, which can affect air quality. The Center, including Bangkok and Ayutthaya, is also optimal during this period, offering milder temperatures and low rainfall. Isan, in the Northeast, follows a similar pattern, with a dry and relatively cool climate from November to January.
Eastern Thailand, including destinations like Pattaya and Koh Chang, enjoys favorable weather from November to April, with sunny conditions and calm seas. The South presents an interesting peculiarity on the map of Thailand: the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is ideal from November to April, while the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) offers its best conditions from February to September. This difference allows travelers to enjoy Thai beaches almost year-round by choosing their destination wisely.
2. Transportation between sites on your trip to Thailand
Regarding transportation, Thailand offers a wide range of options for moving between sites. The domestic air network is well-developed, with several low-cost airlines offering frequent flights between major destinations. This is the ideal option for covering long distances quickly. For a more picturesque experience, the train is an excellent alternative, connecting Bangkok to the north, northeast, and south of the country. Buses and minivans are ubiquitous and offer an economical solution for medium and short journeys.
To access the numerous paradise islands on your Thailand travel map, boats and ferries are essential. It's important to check schedules and safety conditions, particularly during the rainy season. In cities, a variety of local transport like tuk-tuks, songthaews, and motorcycle taxis offer practical and picturesque ways to travel short distances. In Bangkok, the metro and BTS (skytrain) are fast and comfortable options to avoid traffic jams.
3. Tips for a safe trip in Thailand
Thailand is generally a safe destination for travelers, but as in any foreign country, it's important to remain vigilant and take certain precautions. Here are some essential tips to ensure your safety throughout your stay:
Health:
Check your vaccinations before departure
Drink bottled water
Protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes
Personal safety:
Stay vigilant in tourist areas
Keep your valuables secure
Be wary of common scams
Transportation:
Wear a helmet on scooters/motorcycles
Use metered taxis
Be cautious in traffic
Respecting customs:
Dress appropriately in sacred places
Avoid comments about the royal family
Documents and insurance:
Check your passport's validity (at least 6 months after the return date)
Make copies of important documents
Take out travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation
Communication:
Buy a local SIM card to stay connected at a lower cost
Learn some basic Thai phrases to facilitate interactions
Always carry your accommodation address in Thai for taxi drivers
In case of emergency:
Note down local emergency numbers and your embassy's contact
By following these tips and staying attentive, you'll minimize risks and fully enjoy your trip to Thailand.

Wonderful trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam
We reached out to Tina for our trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, and the experience she arranged for us was absolutely wonderful. Our time in the Mekong was filled with unforgettable and authentic experiences that truly allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and lifestyle.
Among the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to make rice paper by hand, which was not only fascinating but also gave us a deep appreciation for the skill and effort involved in this traditional craft. We also visited a coconut candy factory, where we observed the intricate process of making these delicious treats and even had the chance to taste them fresh from the production line. One of the most memorable parts of our journey was rowing down the serene waterways in a traditional sampan, surrounded by the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere of the delta.
