Hello everyone, I’m Daniel Bangre, and I just completed a Pu Luong itinerary 5 days. As a trekking enthusiast, I didn’t hesitate to choose the Pu Luong 5-day trekking tour offered by Autour Asia, the Vietnam travel agency. And honestly, the landscapes there are breathtaking: majestic mountains, stunning rice terraces, and charming, serene ethnic villages. Walking through the Pu Luong Nature Reserve truly enjoys all its beauty and meaningful encounters with the local ethnic groups.
Pu Luong Nature Reserve is located in Thanh Hoa Province, northern Vietnam, about a 5-hour drive from Hanoi. I left Hanoi early in the morning to reach Pu Luong by lunchtime, ready to begin my 5-day itinerary.
My first impression of Pu Luong Nature Reserve was the fresh air and peaceful atmosphere—exactly what I needed after several days in Hanoi's noisy hustle and bustle. Pu Luong is a true nature gem, with its pristine rainforest and stunning rice terraces.
Beyond the breathtaking scenery, the local ethnic groups are incredibly warm and welcoming to visitors. Even though we didn’t speak the same language, their smiles, and genuine hospitality left a deep impression on me. I had many opportunities to connect with the locals by staying in their homes throughout this Pu Luong 5-day itinerary. It was undoubtedly the most authentic and memorable experience I had in Vietnam! And as for the food in Pu Luong? It was simply delicious!
Summary of the 5-day travel itinerary in Pu Luong:
After finishing lunch at a local restaurant and resting at the hotel, I began my 5-day adventure in Pu Luong with Bang Village, the first trekking site.
This village is home to some of the largest rice terraces in the region and is inhabited by the Thai ethnic group. Walking amidst these rice terraces was a captivating experience — not too challenging — and offered me the unique feeling of being immersed in Pu Luong’s natural beauty, surrounded by endless rice terraces stretching as far as the eye can see.

On the second day of my Pu Luong itinerary 5 days, I followed trails to reach Eo Ken Village, another famous spot for its lush and picturesque rice terraces. There, we had the chance to meet the Black Thai people. Nestled at the foot of a majestic mountain, this village presents a serene scene with rice terraces sprawling at the base of the hills. Among the rice terraces, simple houses and farmers working in their fields create a peaceful rural charm.
In the afternoon, I continued my Pu Luong 5-day trek to the nearby Hang Village, surrounded by hills and small caves. This gentle walk about 3 kilometers along the Pung Stream was delightful. In Hang Village, several ethnic groups live together, including the Thais, Muongs, and Kinh, with farming being their primary livelihood.

On the third day of my Pu Luong 5-day trekking, I continued trekking to the Chieng Lau and Tien Moi villages. In Chieng Lau, you can admire numerous water wheels, used only during the rainy season. These wheels spin to the rhythm of the currents, accompanied by the gentle sound of streams.
I had the chance to talk with locals from the Muong ethnic group and learn how they prepare cơm lam, a traditional dish made with rice that has a distinctive aroma.
Next, I went hiking along trails leading to Hieu Hamlet. Although the distance is not very long, the path to Hieu Waterfall is rather rugged, dotted with stones and rocks. However, the surrounding landscape and the beauty of the waterfall make the effort worthwhile.

This was probably the longest trekking day of my 5-day journey in Pu Luong. I started by exploring the Ngo Luong Forest, known for its impressive biodiversity. The trekking guide, who was also very experienced, introduced me to various plant species along the way.
Afterward, I headed to Mu Waterfall, located in an area inhabited by the Muong ethnic group. The trail to this waterfall, about 3 kilometers long, is stunning but remains wild, cutting through dense forest. Upon arrival, I discovered exceptionally pure water, perfect for a refreshing swim. After 4 hours of trekking, I enjoyed a well-deserved rest at a local family’s home.

On my last day, the schedule was lighter due to the early return to Hanoi. On the way, our driver took us directly to the Bat Cave, located near Kho Muong village. This cave is home to four species of bats that live there year-round.
We then had lunch in Lac Village, Mai Chau, before arriving in Hanoi around 7 p.m., marking the end of the Pu Luong 5-day itinerary.
When I visited, the rice harvest season had just ended, which was a bit disappointing as I couldn’t see the golden rice terraces. However, in return, the Pu Luong weather 5 days was quite cool and rain-free. The natural landscapes were still lush and green.
Tip: The golden season of rice terraces in Pu Luong occurs in September and October, which are also the best times to visit this nature reserve.
