What to do in Kratie in 1 day? Discover the interesting outdoor activities in Kratie!

Hello, my name is Frank, and I just had an unforgettable Cambodia trip with many great memories and exciting outdoor activities. If you don’t know where to go in Cambodia to experience its untouched nature, you should add Kratie to your must-visit list. So let me share with you my experiences from my 1-day trip in Kratie. Even if you don’t have much time, 1 day in Kratie is enough to enjoy unique activities.

I. Overview of my one-day itinerary in Kratie

I had a wonderful Cambodia trip, visiting famous places like Siem Reap to explore Angkor Wat, the capital Phnom Penh, and some beautiful beaches. During my Kratie itinerary one day, I had a peaceful day away from the busy city life in Kratie. I spent one day in Kratie to relax and unwind. It is a small province by the Mekong River, giving me a very calm and peaceful feeling.

If you are wondering what to do in Kratie in one day, here are the activities I experienced. In the morning, I visited Roka Kandal Pagoda, an ancient temple just a five-minute walk from my hotel. I had breakfast at a local restaurant nearby and took a short walk to explore the area. After that, I took a ferry to Koh Trong Island—one of the top places to visit in Kratie. I cycled around the island, talked to the locals, and had lunch at a restaurant there.

If you have only one day in Kratie like me, don’t miss the chance to see the Irrawaddy dolphins, a rare dolphin species in the Mekong River. After that, I headed to the Kampi rapids to enjoy a beer and go for a swim—it was truly a refreshing experience. I felt recharged after my long journey. Then, I returned to Kratie town, took a short walk, and packed my things before heading to my next destination on my Cambodia trip.

II. Detailed itinerary of my 24 hours in Kratie

1. Morning : Exploring Roka Kandal Pagoda and Koh Trong Island

I spent one day in Kratie mainly to relax, rest, and explore the less touristy, untouched areas of Cambodia. That morning, after checking into my hotel, I took a walk along the Mekong River. It was such a refreshing and peaceful experience. So, what to do in Kratie? I also visited Roka Kandal Pagoda, an ancient temple located by the Mekong River. The temple had only one or two monks, and not many visitors came here, making it feel very different from the temple visits in Siem Reap. Like most temples in Cambodia, this one had traditional Khmer architecture and was quite old, surrounded by lush greenery.

After that, I took a ferry to Koh Trong Island, which only took about 10 minutes from the riverbank. This is a small, peaceful island, perfect for relaxation and sightseeing. I rented a bicycle to explore the island and observe the local way of life. This one-day Kratie itinerary allowed me to discover a simpler, more authentic side of Cambodia. I got to see the daily life of fishing villagers, explore floating houses on the river, and sit on the grass to unwind.

The locals here were very friendly. Even though we had some language barriers, everything turned out fine. I communicated with them using body language, joined them in picking fruits from their garden, and even got to taste the fresh fruits they offered me. I also had the chance during my Kratie itinerary 1 day to enjoy lunch at a local’s house, where I experienced their food and lifestyle. This is definitely one of the most interesting things to do in Kratie if you want an authentic and immersive experience when traveling in Cambodia.

2. Afternoon & evening : Dolphin watching – Visiting the Kampi rapids

What to do in Kratie in one day? After lunch, I took a short rest and returned to Kratie town. In the afternoon, I took a boat ride to Kampi village to see the Irrawaddy dolphins, a rare species that is endangered. No need to worry about whether you will see them—the boat drivers here are very experienced and know exactly where and when the dolphins will appear. If you only have 24 hours in Kratie, don’t miss this activity because these dolphins were adorable, playfully surfacing above the water. As I learned, local authorities and the Cambodian government have projects to protect these dolphins, ensuring that this part of the river is a safe space for them to rest and find food. You can also try kayaking, like I did, to get a closer view of them. However, you must keep a certain distance to ensure their safety, as these dolphins are quite shy. This was definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my one-day trip to Kratie.

After that, I headed to the nearby Kampi rapids. While on the boat, I admired the simple beauty of the small villages along the Mekong River. Kampi rapids is a place where you can swim, or if you prefer, you can just sit on the riverbank, dip your feet in the cool water, and enjoy food and drinks. There are also plenty of hammocks where you can lie down and relax. I swam for a while, then enjoyed a cold beer—it was such a refreshing experience, definitely something you must try if you spend 1 day in Kratie.

Later in the evening, I returned to Kratie town just in time to watch the sunset over the Mekong River. I took a walk around the streets, visited some local markets, and tried some street food. I then stopped by a riverside restaurant for a beer and had a nice chat with some locals. My one-day trip in Kratie was short but fulfilling—I got to admire the untouched natural beauty of Kratie, enjoy some outdoor activities, and learn about the daily life of the local people.

III. Tips for a Kratie itinerary one day

  • Check the weather before spending 1 day in Kratie, as the rainy season can be quite inconvenient for dolphin watching and other outdoor activities. Cambodia has a tropical climate, so the weather is generally warm. However, if you travel to Cambodia in winter, I wouldn’t recommend swimming in the Kampi rapids.

  • Bring cash. Since Kratie is a small province in Cambodia and not too touristy, some local shops and markets may not accept card payments.

  • Dress appropriately and respect local culture when visiting religious sites, not just in Kratie but throughout Cambodia. If you visit temples, pagodas, or sacred places in your itinerary Kratie 1 day, make sure to wear long clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Keep the area clean and avoid speaking too loudly. In some temples, you must remove your shoes before entering, so pay attention to the signs.

I had the chance to relax during my one-day trip to Kratie, a peaceful and rustic province. Kratie is one of Cambodia’s lesser-known destinations, perfect for those looking for a quiet retreat. It is also an ideal place for nature and wildlife lovers. I am very grateful to Autour Asia, a travel agency in Cambodia, for recommending this destination after listening to my preferences. If you don’t have much time but still want a unique experience, I suggest planning a one-day itinerary in Kratie, just like I did—you won’t regret it!

When can you observe Irrawaddy dolphins?

If you have an itinerary Kratie one day, please note that Irrawaddy dolphins are mainly visible early in the morning and late in the afternoon, when the temperature is cooler, and they are more active. Boat tours are often organized between 8 AM - 10 AM or 4 PM - 6 PM to maximize the chances of spotting them.
