Impression Of Thomas Family About The Combined Trip Vietnam Laos 14-day

Plan a combined trip Vietnam Laos 14-day tour for unique experiences in these two Southeast Asian destinations

Hello, our family just had an amazing Vietnam and Laos itinerary 2 weeks, and I’m excited to share this journey with you. We spent two weeks exploring the food, culture, and famous landmarks of these two Southeast Asian countries. Not only my wife and I, but also our two children had many wonderful memories throughout this Vietnam Laos combined trip. We hope you will have similar experiences when visiting these beautiful countries.

I. Overview of our 14-day Vietnam Laos combined trip

We had wanted to explore Southeast Asia for a long time because of its unique culture and delicious food, so we planned a Vietnam Laos combined trip. Since these two neighboring countries are close to each other, traveling between them was convenient and affordable. Also, we didn’t need to pack too much, as both places have warm weather.

We spent the first week in Vietnam, mainly exploring the iconic sites in the north. Although our Vietnam Laos itinerary 14 days only allowed 1 week in Vietnam, it was a truly fulfilling experience. I got to experience both the bustling city life of Hanoi and the peaceful countryside of Ninh Binh. I was able to admire the emerald waters of HaLong Bay and the rolling mountains of Mai Chau. For me, one week in Vietnam offered an exciting cultural journey.

The second week of our 2-week itinerary Vietnam Laos brought us many exciting activities. My favorite part was exploring the Kuang Si Waterfalls, while my wife was fascinated by the Buddhist architecture in Laos. Our two children enjoyed biking around the city and visiting the night markets in Luang Prabang. We all loved the breathtaking natural landscapes of both countries, each place having its own unique beauty.

II. Detailed itinerary of our Vietnam Laos 2-week combined trip

1. Day 1-2 : Discovering the ancient beauty of Vietnam’s capital

We began our 2-week trip Vietnam Laos in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. On our first day in Hanoi, we mainly walked around exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, where we also booked our hotel. We visited some must-see sites in Hanoi, such as St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the Opera House, and Hoan Kiem Lake. I felt that Hanoi had a unique blend of ancient and modern beauty—even the small alleys had a special charm. My wife loved the old architecture of the houses in the Old Quarter and took many pictures there.

We had an interesting experience enjoying a coffee on Hanoi Train Street while watching a train pass right in front of us. If you’re wondering what to eat in Hanoi when traveling with family and kids, don’t worry. Our family had a wonderful culinary experience—our children really enjoyed the traditional dishes we tried in the Old Quarter, such as pho, bun cha, bun rieu, and banh mi. They were also excited to immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of Hang Ma Street, full of shops selling decorations, Chinese toys, and colorful lanterns.

What to do in Hanoi? Don’t miss discovering Hang Ma Street in the Old Quarter

What to do in Hanoi on the second day of our Vietnam Laos trip? We had the chance to learn more about Vietnam’s culture and history. Through visits to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum - one of the best places to visit in Hanoi, Quan Thanh Temple, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, I gained a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s wartime history as well as the cultures of its ethnic minorities. If you have a Vietnam trip, don’t miss the Hanoi Water Puppet Show—an unmissable theatrical experience. Our two children were fascinated by the performance, completely lost in it.

2. Day 3-4 : Discovering the countryside in Mai Chau and Pu Luong

Where to go in Vietnam? After 2 days in Hanoi, we left the bustling city life behind for a more peaceful place in northern Vietnam’s countryside. Days three and four of our 14-day Vietnam Laos trip allowed us to admire the breathtaking natural scenery of Mai Chau, a picturesque valley village inhabited by the White Thai ethnic group. Your Vietnam trip wouldn’t be complete without seeing terraced rice fields, and this journey offered us stunning views of the terraces and stilt houses, with stops to take photos of sugarcane fields. We also had the chance to meet the White Thai people and enjoy dinner at their home—a great way to learn more about the local culture and cuisine.

If you’re a nature and mountain lover, you definitely can’t miss our next destination in our Vietnam Laos itinerary 2 weeks — Pu Luong. We took a 2-3 hour trek in Pu Luong, walking through charming villages, bamboo water wheels, and the Kho Muong cave. For the most authentic experience, we chose to stay overnight in a traditional stilt house—one of the must-try activities during your Vietnam trip.

3. Day 5-7 : Unforgettable experiences in Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay

After peaceful days in Mai Chau and Pu Luong, our family continued our Vietnam Laos combined trip to Ninh Binh, often called the "Ha Long Bay on land." I was truly impressed by the scenery here—a perfect combination of limestone mountains, rivers, and vast rice fields. One of our most memorable experiences was taking a boat ride through Tam Coc - one of the best places to visit in Vietnam, passing towering mountains and navigating through magnificent caves.

Our next stop was Ha Long Bay, one of Vietnam’s most famous natural wonders. Spending a night on a Halong Bay cruise was one of the most special moments of our Vietnam trip. That evening, we watched the sunset from the deck and enjoyed a delicious seafood dinner together. One of the most interesting things to do in Halong Bay for me was kayaking through the small islands and caves. This Vietnam Laos 2-week itinerary was not only a chance for our family to admire breathtaking landscapes but also a wonderful opportunity to bond and create lasting memories.

4. Days 8-11 : Discovering the unique and peaceful beauty of Luang Prabang, Laos

After a week exploring Vietnam, our family continued our Vietnam Laos 14-day trip to Laos, with our first stop in Luang Prabang. This city gave me a completely different feeling—slow-paced, peaceful, and deeply spiritual. One of our most unforgettable experiences in our Laos trip was waking up early to witness the morning alms-giving ceremony of the monks. The quiet atmosphere, with only the soft footsteps of the monks in their saffron robes, created a truly sacred scene.

What to do in Luang Prabang, Laos? The next day, we cycled around the city, visiting famous temples like Vat Xieng Thong and Vat May - top best places to visit in Luang Prabang. Our children were excited to explore the local market and try traditional Lao dishes. I was most impressed by how Luang Prabang has preserved its traditional beauty amidst modern life.

During our Vietnam Laos itinerary 2 weeks, a trip to Kuang Si Falls was one of the best things to do in Laos. The turquoise water cascading down the limestone tiers created a breathtaking natural landscape. Our family enjoyed an exciting trek through small villages, where we met Hmong and Khamu ethnic people. Beyond the beautiful sights, this Vietnam Laos 14-day trip gave us a deeper understanding of the local cultures of these two Southeast Asian countries.

On our last day in Luang Prabang, we took a boat trip on the Mekong River, visiting the Pak Ou Caves, home to thousands of ancient Buddha statues. As the boat gently glided across the water, I realized that Luang Prabang was not just a destination but also a spiritual experience—one that encouraged us to slow down, appreciate each moment, and connect more deeply with traditional cultural values.

Remember to explore Pak Ou caves during your Vietnam Laos 2-week trip

5. Days 12-14 : Visiting Vientiane – the capital of Laos

Where to go in Laos? The final stop of our Vietnam Laos trip 14 days took us to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. After leaving Luang Prabang by train, we arrived in Vientiane in the late afternoon, just in time to watch the sunset over the Mekong River. If you want to explore the best places to visit in Vientiane, including That Luang Stupa, Patuxay, and Wat Sisaket. I was particularly impressed by Buddha Park—a unique place filled with hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu statues, each with its own mysterious charm. My two children were excited to climb on the giant sculptures and admire the intricate details of the carvings.

On the last day of our Laos trip, before leaving, I took some time to walk around the city and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of Vientiane. This 14-day Vietnam Laos trip gave my family unforgettable experiences—not only with the beautiful landscapes but also with the warm people and rich cultures of these two Southeast Asian countries.

III. Travel tips for a Vietnam Laos combined tour

  • Book your flights and train tickets early to optimize your budget and secure your seats. Also, don’t forget to reserve hotels in advance, especially in popular tourist destinations like Luang Prabang or Ha Long, to avoid last-minute unavailability during peak seasons.

  • When traveling between cities, you can rent a private car or take a bus to enjoy the scenic routes. Within cities, taxis or buses are good options for families. If you are traveling solo or with friends, you might consider renting a motorbike, a common means of transport in Vietnam. However, make sure to learn how to use it properly and be cautious on the roads.

  • The weather between the two countries can vary, so bring flexible clothing. Comfortable shoes are essential for trekking, and long-sleeved tops are recommended for visiting temples.

  • During your 2-week Vietnam Laos trip, you will visit many religious sites, especially temples. When visiting temples in Laos and Vietnam, dress modestly, respect local customs, and maintain a quiet atmosphere to preserve the sacred space.

This Vietnam Laos itinerary 14 days was truly an unforgettable experience for our family. If we have the chance, we will definitely return to Vietnam and Laos to explore more places we couldn’t visit this time. We also plan to discover other Southeast Asian countries for more fascinating cultural experiences, just like what our Vietnam Laos 2 week trip offered us.
