II. What to do in Thailand? My 2-week Thailand tour at low budget

Hello, my name is Emma. I'm from France and I’ve just finished my studies. I’ve always dreamed of discovering Asia, and I wanted to start with a 2-week Thailand tour at low budget to explore the country without spending too much. I can’t wait to discover the culture, nature, and local food. Follow my 2 weeks in Thailand, I hope it will inspire you to visit this beautiful country one day!

Here’s an overview of my Thailand 2 week itinerary on a budget:

  • Days 1 - 3: Bangkok
  • Day 4: Ayutthaya
  • Days 5 - 8: Chiang Mai
  • Day 9: Chiang Rai
  • Day 10: Flight to Phuket
  • Days 11 - 12: Phuket & Phang Nga Bay
  • Day 13: Phi Phi Islands & Krabi
  • Day 14: Return to Bangkok

Days 1 - 3: Immersion in Bangkok

After several hours of flying, I arrived in Bangkok, where the AUTOUR ASIA guide welcomed me warmly. Once I had checked in and rested at the hotel, I began my 2-week Thailand tour at low budget by visiting Wat Pho. In the evening, I wandered around Khao San Road to try the lively street food.

Discover Bangkok, Thailand's capital

On the second day, I discovered Bangkok’s must-see sites: Wat Phra Kaew - one of best temples in Bangkok, and the Grand Palace. After lunch, I took the Blue Flag boat on the Chao Phraya River to admire the city from a different angle and visited Wat Arun at sunset, before ending the day in Chinatown Bangkok.

Continuing my Thailand 2 week itinerary, I explored the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, tasted local specialties, and did a bit of shopping. In the afternoon, I returned to Bangkok to enjoy a Thai massage, the perfect relaxing break to end these 3 days in the capital.

The total cost for these 3 days in Bangkok was €105.

Day 4: Exploring Ayutthaya

In the morning, I took an early train to Ayutthaya, a ride of just over an hour, with a ticket costing only 2–3 USD. Once I arrived, I visited some of the best temples in Ayutthaya, such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon.

After lunch, I headed to the Ayutthaya floating market, a must-see if you’re wondering what to do in Thailand. I took a boat ride for 6 USD to admire the market and the wooden bridges. Tasting local specialties in Ayutthaya right on the boat made my 2-week Thailand tour at low budget even more memorable, while enjoying the peaceful scenery of this area.

Day trip to Ayutthaya

At the end of the day, I took the night train to Chiang Mai at 9 p.m., arriving at 8:40 the next morning. I chose an air-conditioned sleeper seat to rest well while saving on a hotel, a perfect tip for a cheap travel to Thailand.

The total cost for 1 day in Ayutthaya, including the train tickets to Ayutthaya and to Chiang Mai, was 40 to 50€.

Days 5 - 8: Adventure in Chiang Mai

I arrived in Chiang Mai in the morning and first took some time to rest at the hotel before exploring the old town and its iconic temples: Wat Phra Singh, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Chedi Luang. I then tried some local specialties at the lively Warorot Market.

On the second day, I spent the whole day at Doi Inthanon National Park. The twin pagodas surrounded by a beautiful garden left a strong impression on me. I hiked the Pha Dok Siew Trail, one of best things to do in Chiang Mai, passing waterfalls, wooden bridges, and terraced rice fields before reaching the Karen village of Mae Klang Luang, where I enjoyed local tea and coffee. It was one of the best moments of my Thailand cheap tour.

Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, a beautiful trekking route

Continuing my 2-week Thailand tour at low budget, I visited Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched on the mountain with a panoramic view over Chiang Mai. In the afternoon, I wandered around the city, enjoyed a Thai massage in Chiang Mai, and discovered the Sunday Walking Street Market - the famous Sunday night market where I tasted local dishes like Khao Soi and Sai Oua at a very good price.

Wondering what to do in Thailand? For my last day in Chiang Mai, I went to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, located 30–45 minutes from the city center. I didn’t ride the elephants or watch any shows; instead, I fed them, observed their natural behavior, and joined them for a bath in the river. After that, I returned to the hotel to rest.

The total cost for 4 days in Chiang Mai (visits, meals, transportation, elephant experience, massage) was about 80 to 100€.

Day 9: Excursion to Chiang Rai

Early in the morning, I took the bus to Chiang Rai, about a 3-hour ride. During this day in Chiang Rai, I explored the White Temple, the Blue Temple, and the Black House. After lunch, I took a boat trip on the Mae Kok River, enjoying the peaceful scenery and visiting a Karen village. In the evening, I had dinner at a local restaurant and spent the night in Chiang Rai to get ready for the next part of my Thailand 2 week itinerary.

Chiang Rai, a must-visit during my 2 weeks in Thailand

The total cost for one day in Chiang Rai was around 25–30€, including transportation, visits, and meals.

Day 10: Flight to Phuket

How to get to Phuket from Chiang Rai? I took a flight with a layover in Bangkok, with quite a long transit time. When I arrived in Phuket, I went straight to the hotel to check in and rest a bit before continuing my cheap Thailand trip.

The total cost for this day was around 40–60€.

Days 11 - 12: Exploring Phuket and its islands

Continuing my 2-week Thailand tour at low budget, I woke up early to enjoy the fresh southern air. After a stop at Karon Viewpoint to admire the beaches of Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon, I visited the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong - two of the top things to do in Phuket. In the evening, I wandered around the market and enjoyed a seafood dinner to end my first day in Phuket.

The next day, I joined a speedboat excursion to Phang Nga Bay. There, I went kayaking around Phanak Island, visited James Bond Island, and discovered the floating village of Koh Panyee. The day ended with some relaxation and sunbathing on Hong Island before returning to Phuket.

The total cost for 2 days in Phuket (visits, meals, and the Phang Nga Bay excursion) was about 60–70€.

Discover Phuket, Koh Phi Phi and Krabi

Day 13: Excursion to Phi Phi Islands & Krabi

For my last day in Southern Thailand, I combined the sea and nature in Krabi. In the morning, I explored the Phi Phi Islands by speedboat: visiting Viking Cave, Phi Leh Bay, and stopping at Maya Bay with its turquoise waters. After lunch, I headed to Krabi, where I discovered the Emerald Pool, a crystal-clear natural pool in the heart of the jungle, perfect for cooling off and ending my Thailand 2 week itinerary on a memorable note.

The total cost for this day, including the island tour, meals, and the visit to the Emerald Pool, was around 40–50€.

Day 14: Flight back to Bangkok – End of the trip

In the morning, I took a flight to Bangkok and relaxed at the airport before my flight back to France. My 2-week Thailand tour at low budget came to an end, leaving me with unforgettable memories of the culture, nature, and local food.

Flight prices from Phuket to Bangkok range between 20 and 38€.

III. How to plan a cheap 2-week trip to Thailand?

1. When to visit Thailand without spending too much?

When is the best time to visit Thailand? Traveling to Thailand in May is ideal if you want to enjoy 2-week Thailand tour at low budget, as it’s the low season with fewer tourists and more affordable prices. You can easily find cheap flights and budget-friendly accommodations, as well as good deals on tours and activities. Even if short showers may occur in the afternoon or evening, the weather is still great for exploring the main attractions. Many hotels and resorts, especially along the Andaman coast, offer discounts, making it easier to enjoy a cheap travel to Thailand.

My Thailand 2-week itinerary includes Chiang Mai, which can be quite hot in May. However, visiting waterfalls is a great way to cool down. Remember to pack lightweight clothes and a small portable fan to enjoy Northern Thailand comfortably while keeping your Thailand on a budget 2 weeks trip under control.

2. Where to stay in Thailand on a low budget?

For a cheap Thailand trip, you will easily find comfortable accommodation throughout your Thailand 2 week itinerary.
  • Bangkok: Ban Thungdang Housetel, a 3-star hotel (4.7/5 on Google Maps), offers rooms between 14 and 24 euros, perfectly located in the city center.
  • Chiang Mai: T2B Hostel (4.9/5 on Google Maps), a 2-star hotel in the heart of the city, offers rooms from 8 to 12 euros, convenient for reaching the main attractions.
  • Chiang Rai: Mercy Hostel (4.7/5 on Google Maps) has rooms for 8 to 10 euros, close to major sites like Wat Phra Kaew.
  • Phuket: Phuket Sunny Hostel, a 2-star hotel, welcomes travelers for 15 to 20 euros per night.
With these options, it is absolutely possible to enjoy 2 weeks in Thailand without going over your budget.

3. Where to eat in Thailand for a cheap trip?

For a cheap Thailand trip, there’s nothing better than enjoying local food at markets or street stalls, especially at night. Typical dishes like pad Thai, khao soi, or mango sticky rice are easy to find for just a few euros, offering an authentic and delicious experience.

In Bangkok, the street food in Chinatown and on Khao San Road is a safe bet. In Chiang Mai, markets like Warorot offer a wide variety of fresh dishes at low prices. In the South, food courts in Phuket or small local restaurants near the beaches allow you to eat well without spending much. By choosing these local spots, you can keep your budget under control while tasting the country’s most typical flavors.

4. How to get around Thailand cheaply?

What is the cheapest ways to get around in Thailand? For a 2-week Thailand tour at low budget, choosing the right transport is essential.

Between cities, long-distance buses and trains are economical and comfortable, especially sleeper trains, which save you a night at a hotel. For longer distances, like Chiang Rai to Phuket or Phuket to Bangkok, low-cost flights (Thai Lion Air, AirAsia, Nok Air) are fast and affordable (20–60€).

Within cities, use songthaews and local buses in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai for just a few euros, tuk-tuks and moto-taxis for short trips (negotiate the price), or rent motorcycles and scooters for more freedom. In the South, ferries and speedboats connect the islands at reasonable prices, but don’t forget to negotiate.

Tip: Book in advance, compare prices, and combine transport with activities to make the most of your Thailand trip while keeping your budget under control.

The cost of a 2-week Thailand tour at low budget is usually between 500 and 630€. Here is a summary table inspired by Emma’s experience, with a few possible extra expenses added by AUTOUR ASIA. Costs may vary depending on each traveler, so this table is provided as a general guideline.
