II. Detailed itinerary of 2 days in Chiang Rai
1. Day 1: Immersion in history and culture
What to do in Chiang Rai in 2 days? The first day began at the break of dawn. My guide picked me up at my hotel in a comfortable vehicle, ready to take me through Chiang Rai’s iconic treasures.
White Temple (Wat Rong Khun): To start my journey in
Chiang Rai in 2 days, the first stop was the famous White Temple, an iconic landmark of the city. As soon as I arrived, I was in awe of the beauty and uniqueness of this place. This modern temple, entirely white and embedded with mirrors, reflects the sunlight with an almost otherworldly splendor.
My guide explained that the architect, Chalermchai Kositpipat, wanted to create a temple that symbolizes purity and Buddhist wisdom. Every detail of the temple holds deep spiritual meaning, from the exterior sculptures representing life’s obstacles to the interior murals that blend traditional art with modern references. I took my time exploring this incredible site and capturing its splendor in photos.
Black House (
Baan Dam Museum): After the bright purity of the White Temple, we headed to the mysterious Black House. This place is a kind of artistic antithesis to the White Temple: dark, enigmatic, and full of symbolism.
The Black House is actually a museum made up of several traditional wooden buildings created by the local artist Thawan Duchanee. It houses a strange and fascinating collection of objects, ranging from bone sculptures to heavy wooden furniture decorated with tribal motifs. I found this place intriguing, though a bit unsettling. It’s a unique experience, one of the best things to do in Chiang Rai, offering a deep dive into the world of contemporary Thai art.
Golden Triangle and Mekong River Boat Tour: After a busy morning, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Then, we continued our journey to the Golden Triangle, a historic area where three countries meet: Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.
If you're in Chiang Rai 2 days, I highly recommend taking a boat trip on the Mekong River, an unforgettable experience that will allow you to discover the region's natural beauty from a different perspective. It’s one of the best things to do in Chiang Rai if you want to relax and enjoy the serene landscapes. I boarded for a peaceful cruise on the Mekong. From the boat, I could admire the surrounding scenery and listen to my guide’s fascinating stories about the region’s history, once famous for opium trading. This moment of calm on the river allowed me to recharge before the final visit of the day.
Long Neck Karen Village: What to do in Chiang Rai? The day ended with a visit to a small Karen village, where I had the opportunity to meet women from the long-necked tribe. These women wear stacked brass rings around their necks, a unique tradition that symbolizes their cultural identity. The village, though modest, was full of authenticity. The locals were welcoming, and I learned a lot about their customs and way of life. It was a rewarding human experience that gave me a deeper understanding of Thailand's ethnic minorities.
End of the day: I spent the night in a comfortable hotel in Chiang Rai, selected by Autour Asia, ready to discover even more the next day.
2. Day 2: Immersion in nature and serenity
After a first day filled with cultural discoveries, the second day of my itinerary in Chiang Rai in 2 days was all about nature and relaxation.
Doi Tung Palace and Mae Fah Luang Garden: How to spend 2 days in Chiang Rai? In the morning, we headed to Doi Tung Palace, an iconic site perched in the mountains. This former residence of the Thai Queen Mother is a harmonious blend of Swiss and Thai architecture.
The Mae Fah Luang Garden surrounding the palace were simply breathtaking. The flower-lined paths, perfectly maintained flower beds, and panoramic views of the mountains offered me a moment of complete serenity. My guide shared the inspiring story of the Queen Mother, who played a key role in the region’s development. We then took a break for lunch at a local restaurant, where I enjoyed a typical regional dish with delicate, balanced flavors.
Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten): The afternoon began with a visit to the Blue Temple, another architectural marvel in Chiang Rai. Unlike the White Temple, this temple is adorned in shades of deep blue, both inside and out. Its interior is even more impressive, with intricate murals and sculptures that seem to tell a mystical story. I was captivated by the peaceful atmosphere that permeates this place.
Singha Park and Tea Plantation: To end the day on a high note, we visited Singha Park, a vast tea plantation surrounded by lush green hills. I had the opportunity to enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea while taking in the spectacular landscape. It was a moment of pure joy and a perfect way to conclude my stay in
Chiang Rai 2 days.
End of the day: In the late afternoon, after my adventure in Chiang Rai in 2 days, I took a comfortable transfer arranged by Autour Asia to return to Chiang Mai.
