This journey allowed us to discover breathtaking landscapes, a rich culture, and a fascinating history. I. Overview of Our Itinerary during a week in Cambodia and the Cambodian Weather

Our family spent a week in Cambodia, a country of many facets where history, culture, and stunning landscapes intertwine. We began our journey in Phnom Penh, the vibrant capital, where we visited must-see historical sites such as the Royal Palace and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. After this cultural immersion, we headed to Siem Reap, dedicating two days of our itinerary during 7 days in Cambodia to exploring the majestic Angkor Wat and other iconic temples, which stand as remarkable testaments to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire. The mystical atmosphere of the temples at dawn and the architectural splendor of the site left a lasting impression on us.

We then continued our journey to Battambang, a charming colonial town where we enjoyed a ride on the famous bamboo train. After this picturesque stop, we traveled south to relax on the fine sandy beaches and swim in the crystal-clear waters of Sihanoukville and Koh Rong - a true escape into nature and tranquility. To conclude our family trip for 7 days in Cambodia, we returned to Phnom Penh for one last day, taking time to stroll through the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center.

1. Day 1: Phnom Penh

As soon as we arrived in Phnom Penh, we were immediately immersed in the excitement of the Cambodian capital. Our first destination in the itinerary of a week in Cambodia was the Royal Palace, a true architectural gem where gold and elegantly sculpted roofs bear witness to the splendor of the monarchy. Strolling through the perfectly maintained gardens and admiring the Silver Pagoda, with its floor covered in silver tiles, amazed us. Our children, fascinated by the statues and colorful frescoes, asked a thousand questions about the history of the country. However, the overwhelming heat and the large crowds sometimes made the visit trying, especially for the youngest.

What to do during 7 days in Cambodia? The afternoon was a much more poignant experience with the visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. A former high school converted into a prison under the Khmer Rouge regime, this place full of history moved us deeply. As we walked through the cramped cells and discovered the testimonies of survivors, we became aware of the magnitude of this tragedy. Our teenagers were particularly touched by the photographs on display, which pay tribute to the thousands of victims. This visit, although emotionally difficult, seemed essential to us to better understand Cambodia's past.

2. Days 2-3: Siem Reap and Angkor Wat

After arriving in Siem Reap, we began our exploration of Angkor Wat at dawn. Seeing the sun rise behind the majestic towers of this mythical temple was an unforgettable spectacle. The peaceful atmosphere of the morning, with the mist floating above the moat, immersed us in an almost unreal setting. We took our time to admire the detailed bas-reliefs telling the Hindu epics and were impressed by the immensity of the site. However, the heat quickly made the walk more demanding, and despite the wonder, the children began to show signs of fatigue after several hours of visiting.

The second day of a week in Cambodia was dedicated to discovering other emblematic temples like Bayon and Ta Prohm. The first, with its faces carved in stone, fascinated us with its mystery and unique architecture. The children had fun looking for the different faces hidden in the towers, transforming the visit into a real treasure hunt. As for Ta Prohm, covered by the imposing roots of the cheese trees, it gave us the impression of being in an adventure film set. This mix of nature and ancient remains was fascinating, although some passages are difficult to cross because of the collapsed stones and the tourist crowds.

After these days full of discoveries, we took the time to relax in the center of Siem Reap. A walk to the night market allowed us to taste the local cuisine and bring back some artisanal souvenirs. We particularly appreciated the warm welcome of the inhabitants and the lively atmosphere of the city in the evening. These two days discovering Angkor among 7 days in Cambodia amazed us, even if the intensity of the visits and the heat were sometimes trying. Fortunately, we had planned regular breaks and plenty of water to fully enjoy this unique family experience.

3. Day 4: Battambang

Upon our arrival in Battambang on day 4 of our itinerary of a week in Cambodia, we were immediately charmed by its unique colonial atmosphere. As we strolled through its quiet streets, lined with softly-hued buildings, we felt like we were traveling back in time. Far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, this small town offered us an authentic haven of peace. After exploring the local markets and visiting a few pagodas, we enjoyed a Khmer lunch at a small family-run restaurant. The spicy flavors were delicious, although the kids had a little trouble adjusting to the spicier dishes.

What to do during 7 days in Cambodia? In the afternoon, we had a memorable experience boarding the famous bamboo train. Seated on a simple wooden platform on wheels, we sped through the countryside, enjoying the breeze and the green landscapes. The kids were having a blast, laughing with every jolt of the train. However, the intense heat and lack of shade during the ride made the experience a bit overwhelming. Despite this, this unusual adventure through the rice fields was one of the most memorable moments of our stay in Battambang.

4. Days 5-6: Sihanoukville and Koh Rong

After several days of exploring, we finally arrived in Sihanoukville, eager to enjoy some rest by the beach. As soon as we arrived, we were amazed by the long stretch of white sand and the clear water sparkling in the sun. We chose to spend the afternoon at Otres Beach, a more peaceful beach than the beaches in the city center. While the children were happily building sandcastles and playing in the waves, we enjoyed the peace and quiet in the shade of the palm trees. The only downside is that some rubbish is scattered in some areas, spoiling the beauty of the beach as well as the aesthetics. However, we believe that this phenomenon is not common.

What to do during 7 days in Cambodia? The next day, we left for Koh Rong, a paradise island with pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. Here, far from the hustle and bustle of Sihanoukville, we discovered a true haven of peace. Snorkeling allowed us to observe schools of colorful fish and fascinating corals, a magical moment for the whole family. After lunch facing the ocean, we explored the path leading to a secluded cove, a real little corner of paradise. However, the stifling midday heat made the walk more difficult, forcing us to take several breaks in the shade.

These two days at sea of the itinerary for a week in Cambodia offered us the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration. The kids enjoyed endless swimming while my husband and I took in the peace and quiet and beautiful scenery. Although the number of tourists in Sihanoukville in early summer can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, our trip to Koh Rong more than made up for this minor inconvenience.

5. Day 7: Back to Phnom Penh

For our last day among 7 days in Cambodia, we opted for a visit to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, a great way to end our trip while raising awareness among the children about animal conservation. This vast sanctuary allowed us to observe fascinating species up close, such as rescued elephants, mischievous gibbons and majestic tigers. Our children particularly enjoyed the experience of feeding some of the animals under the supervision of the keepers, a moment that was both fun and educational. We really appreciated the commitment of the center and the quality of the explanations provided, all in a friendly atmosphere. However, the size of the site and the oppressive heat made the visit a bit trying, especially after a busy week. Despite this, this immersion in the heart of nature left us with a lasting memory, concluding our stay in Cambodia in an enriching way.

The family travel during a week in Cambodia was an unforgettable adventure, between cultural discoveries, unspoiled nature and moments of family relaxation.
