7. My 2-day Mai Chau itinerary

Here’s how my 2-day Mai Chau itinerary went, designed to fully experience the valley without feeling rushed.

a. Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau

The day started early, departing from Hanoi around 7:30 a.m. for a picturesque journey through the Vietnamese countryside. After about three hours on the road, I arrived at the hotel around 10:30 a.m., where a warm welcome awaited me in a charming stilt house. At noon, I enjoyed a typical Mai Chau meal with com lam, free-range chicken, accompanied by wild vegetables and a bit of local rice wine.

In the afternoon, around 2:00 p.m., a guided bicycle ride took me through the golden rice fields and limestone mountains to the villages of Pom Coong and Lac, where I could observe the daily life of the Thai inhabitants. I even had the chance to stop at a small workshop to take part in an introduction to natural fabric dyeing — a craft experience both soothing and enriching.

At the end of the day, around 5:30 p.m., I returned to the hotel to relax with a refreshing drink. The evening ended beautifully with a friendly barbecue in the courtyard, followed by a traditional Thai music and dance performance — an authentic and unforgettable moment.

b. Day 2: Mai Chau – Waterfalls – Hanoi

The next day started calmly around 6:30–7:30 a.m. with a good breakfast at the hotel, before setting off on a motorbike ride through the surrounding villages to the stunning Tat Nang Waterfall. Around 8:30 a.m., I enjoyed a relaxing moment in a community hot spring — a particularly pleasant experience in Mai Chau in November. In summer, travelers can instead cool off in the waterfall or at Hoa Binh Lake.

By 9:30 a.m., the road led me to Go Lao Waterfall, where I could swim at the foot of the falls before reaching a magnificent viewpoint overlooking Hoa Binh Lake, the largest lake in Vietnam. Back at the hotel around 11 a.m., I enjoyed a final moment of rest and a friendly lunch before heading back to Hanoi around 3 p.m.

These 2 days in Mai Chau were more than just a short getaway; they represented a deep immersion into Vietnamese authenticity during my first trip to the country. As a city dweller accustomed to a fast-paced life, I found a peaceful refuge that reconnected me with nature, Thai traditions, and genuine human encounters. Moments like fabric dyeing, sharing a barbecue, bathing in a hot spring, and cycling reminded me of the value of simplicity and cultural diversity.
