Impressions After 2 Weeks In Laos In August Of The Megne Family

1. Day 1-2: Vientiane

To start our 2 weeks in Laos in August, we stayed at the Lao Poet Hotel, a peaceful hotel in the heart of the capital. It was also close to the Vientiane Night Market, allowing us to stroll and shop.

On day 1, we visited Patuxai Monument, the city's iconic landmark. From the summit, the panoramic view was breathtaking. Afterward, we marveled at That Luang, a golden stupa shining brightly in the August sun. The serenity of the place left a lasting impression on us.

On day 2, we visited Buddha Park. This place is famous for its unique reclining Buddha statue. Then, we ended the day at Wat Phra Keo. This temple immersed us in the religious history of Laos. In the evening, we visited the Vientiane Night Market next to the hotel to explore the nightlife and buy some souvenirs.

2. Day 3-4: Vang Vieng

Continuing our 2 weeks in Laos in August, we traveled to Vang Vieng. Here, we chose the Riverside Boutique Resort, located on the riverfront with breathtaking views of the karst mountains. The kids loved the pool, while we enjoyed the tranquility of the surroundings.

Nang Pha Cave was our first adventure in Vang Vieng. It is famous for its impressive, magical stalactites, formed millions of years ago. In the afternoon, we took a boat trip on the Nam Song River. The calm waters and towering cliffs offered us a moment of peace and relaxation.

On the 4th day of our 2 weeks in Laos in August, we headed to our next destination: the Blue Lagoon and Tham Phu Kham Cave. The Blue Lagoon is a turquoise lake with many fun playgrounds; the children were delighted to swim and play in the cool, clear water. At sunset, we took a hot air balloon ride to fully enjoy the view of Vang Vieng bathed in the pinkish-orange light of the last day. It was an unforgettable experience for my family.

3. Day 5-7: Luang Prabang - Highlight of Laos 2 weeks in August

On the morning of day 5 of our 2 weeks in Laos in August, we traveled to Luang Prabang and stayed at Maison Dalabua, an enchanting hotel surrounded by lotus ponds.

In the afternoon, we visited Wat Xieng Thong, with its colorful mosaics and exquisite architecture. Afterward, we rested at Kuang Si Waterfall, where the children enjoyed a swim in the turquoise waters.

On the sixth day, we climbed to the summit of Phou Si to admire a panoramic view of Luang Prabang. The mountain is not very high, only 300 steps to reach the summit. In the afternoon, we visited Wat Wisunarat, the oldest temple in Luang Prabang.

4. Day 8-9: Xieng Khuang

In Xieng Khuang, we stayed at the Vansana Plain of Jars Hotel, a simple but comfortable hotel with unobstructed views of the hills.

We were fascinated by the mysterious Plain of Jars. The giant stone jars scattered across the lush green hills sparked our curiosity and imagination. We spent time wandering among these ancient remains, listening to local legends about their origins.

On Day 7, we visited That Foun, a sacred brick structure that marks the Buddhist era of the region. The stupa is built on a high mound. From here, one can comfortably admire the surrounding landscape, consisting of vast rice paddies and prosperous Laotian villages.

5. Day 9-11: Champasak

For this destination, we stayed at The River Resort, an eco-friendly hotel on the banks of the Mekong River in Champasak. From our terrace, we watched a blazing sunset every evening.

In Si Phan Don, we kayaked around the Somphamit Waterfalls. Seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins was a magical moment for the whole family. We also explored the islands by bike, greeted by local children.

A visit to Wat Phou, a UNESCO-listed Khmer archaeological site, added a mystical touch to our stay.

6. Day 12-14: Savannakhet

To finish our 2 weeks in Laos in August, we chose the Daosavanh Resort & Spa, a charming colonial hotel nestled on the riverbank.

The That Ing Hang stupa, a major pilgrimage site, impressed us with its spirituality. We also visited Wat Xayaphoum, admired the French colonial buildings, and discovered the Heuan Hinh Stone House, a reminder of another era.

On our last day, we strolled through the Savanxay market, tasted exotic fruits, and bought some souvenirs before saying goodbye to Laos.

These 2 weeks in Laos in August offered us a total immersion in a country both spiritual and authentic. Our accommodations, carefully chosen for their charm and proximity to the sites, contributed to the success of this stay. Between majestic temples, breathtaking landscapes, and touching encounters, Laos taught us to slow down and appreciate the beauty of simple things. Traveling in August allowed us to enjoy lush nature and a pleasant climate. This journey will remain etched in our hearts as one of the most beautiful family trips we have ever experienced.
