Hi everyone, it’s Kevin ! Being both a huge fan of travel and constantly in search of genuine experiences, I spent 2 days in Tam Coc – Ninh Binh recently which is a place that I was completely won over by. Located in northern Vietnam, Tam Coc – the “Halong Bay on land” – charms travellers with stunning landscapes and serenity. During my trip, organized with Autour Asia, a local travel agency in Vietnam, I uncovered a secret haven ideal for those seeking what to do in Tam Coc on a shoestring. So, come along and let me show you how you can have a great time on a budget in Tam Coc, where nature, authenticity and peace of mind blend seamlessly.
Only a two-hour drive from Hanoi, Tam Coc – Ninh Binh stands out as a charming hidden gem in the northern Vietnamese landscape. At this place, nature rule: limestone mountains tower over green rice fields while tiny sampan boats float on the Ngo Dong River. Away from the hordes of Halong Bay, Tam Coc presents a tranquil and rustic setting that seems genuinely real. This is the ideal cheap 2-day trip to Tam Coc for anyone who wants to marvel at breathtaking views, partake in cultural experiences and unwind from the craziness in the very core of the countryside of Vietnam.
What makes this place extra special is that you can have an amazing experience without spending a lot. Affordable accommodations, tasty local cuisine and fun activities like buffalo rides offer you a truly authentic insight into rural living. So if you’re travelling alone, as a couple or in a group of friends, Tam Coc Ninh Binh is definitely the best place for on a shoestring travellers who want to be spoilt with experiences in nature, culture and calm.
Following a brief two-hour trip from Hanoi, I at last arrived in Tam Coc — a peaceful haven surrounded by rice paddies, where the sound of the river blends with the chorus of the birds. I chose to stay at Tam Coc Tropical Homestay, one of the best homestay in Tam Coc, a peaceful hideaway managed by a very friendly local family. From the first second, I feel right at home and am already itching to explore the amazing scenery surrounding me.
Among all that I did in my 2 days in Tam Coc, peaceful ride along the Ngo Dong River is the best thing that I enjoyed. Perched at the bow of the tiny sampan, I allow myself to be lulled by the easy tempo of the oarswoman, who deftly paddles with her feet — a common but mesmerizing sight. Limestone mountains are reflected in the water all around me, rice paddies extend as far as the eye can see and the only noise is the soft lapping of the water. I go through a couple natural caves, each one more breathtaking than the previous… It was one of those moments of absolute tranquility that I will always treasure.
I stopped for lunch at a small local restaurant before going on to Bich Dong Pagoda, the ancient temple complex set into the slope of a mountain. It's a bit of a climb, but the views get more and more stunning by the step. We go through three tiers of pagodas - the lower, middle, and upper - linked by stone stairways and caves scooped out of the mountain. From there the view over Tam Coc and the rice paddies around is breathtaking. It’s a place where if you really let yourself feel it, you can experience peace and the raw power of nature simultaneously. If you were asking what to do in Tam Coc in 2 days, then Bich Dong Pagoda is one stop you really should make for being as much a spiritual place as for the deep sense of calm it delivers.
Late in the day, I was climbing the stairs of Hang Mua, one of the best things to do in Ninh Binh. It’s a bit of a climb, but every resting point has an amazing view. When I finally frog-marched to the top, I was at a loss for words at the view of Tam Coc beneath me — the river snaking in between the limestone mountains, the sea of rice fields bleeding into the horizon, and a sun setting that colored everything with a shade of gold. A few visitors linger to meditate, some to snap the perfect shot — but Hang Mua is an experience that anyone who enjoys adventure, nature, and mind-blowing vistas should not overlook.
After this beautiful escape, I headed back to Tam Coc for a well-deserved dinner: grilled goat, crispy rice, and a cold beer — the perfect combo to end the day on a relaxed note during my cheap 2-day trip to Tam Coc, before resting up for more discoveries the next morning.
On the second day, everything began gently. After a quiet breakfast facing the rice fields still covered in morning mist, I felt full of energy and excitement to explore the countryside. I hopped on my bicycle, ready to discover the authentic rural life — an unmissable experience during my 2 days in Tam Coc.
The moment I arrived, I was struck by something completely different: no rushes of people, no overwhelming noise — just the sound of children laughing, the wind blowing across rice paddies, and the slow pace of the water buffalo. With a farmer who lived there, I dove into the daily work of life on the land — planting rice, flooding the paddies, and harvesting in the blazing sun. It was a once in a lifetime experience and made my 2-day Tam Coc itinerary so much more real and alive. I was exhausted yet inspired, I had at last discovered why those mundane instants were so brimming with truth and grace.
Among the most unique adventures of my trip, the buffalo ride was certainly one for the books. At first, I was a little bit scared, but curiosity quickly took over. Climbing onto the back of this massive animal and feeling every plodding step it took through the mud and its silent power was an experience like no other. The rice paddies were all around me, the sun was shining on me, and I was feeling that peaceful moment every single second. It’s a simple experience, but it has so much charm — it’s a real, enjoyable way to get hands-on with nature and rural life. If you want to do something different on your 2-day trip to Tam Coc this is undoubtedly one of the most memorable things to do.
After this lovely experience, I shared a simple lunch with the host family. We had rice, vegetables from the garden, and a few local dishes — all prepared with care. I really enjoyed that quiet, homey moment around the table.
In the afternoon, it was time for more discoveries! I tried out traditional fishing with a nơm, a bamboo basket that locals have used for generations. It wasn’t easy, but every attempt ended in laughter. I later stopped by Buffalo Cave waterfall to enjoy the mist – a misty and calm place encircled by rich forest where the motion of the space-time continuum seemed to be broken. Later in the day, I was fortunate to take part in a small Vietnamese cooking lesson: chopping, mixing, tasting, laughing with the locals…everything took place in a jovial, congenial vibe. Every experience enabled me to connect more intimately with village life and with the peaceful, serene essence of Tam Coc. It was a fantastic finale to my cheap 2-day trip to Tam Coc, filled with discoveries, beaming smiles and unforgettable moments of sharing.
After all that, I went back to my homestay to get ready for departure. Before long I was back in the car heading to hanoi. The highway was empty, and in my head I went through everything I had seen the last two days — the boat ride, the friendly locals with broad grins, and the buffalo trek. These 2 days in Tam Coc are among the best I have ever had — they captured a Vietnam that was uncomplicated, friendly, and teeming with life.
