In Luang Prabang, I spent 3 days exploring the old town, the Royal Palace, and some famous temples like Wat Xieng Thong. These are must-see places. In the evening, I strolled through the night market to discover local specialties.
Upon arrival in this ancient capital, I had many hotel and guesthouse options. I stayed at My Dream Boutique Resort - Luang Prabang, a charming, quiet, and comfortable haven on the banks of the Nam Khan River, ideal for relaxing.
Then, I headed to Vang Vieng, known for its spectacular scenery. This pretty town offered several interesting activities like kayaking, hot air balloon rides, and cave exploration. I never had time to get bored! I spent two nights at Riverside Boutique Resort, which offers magnificent views of the river and mountains.
I finally arrived in Vientiane, the peaceful capital of the country. There, I visited That Luang, Patuxai, and the Mekong River at sunset to round off my first week in Laos. Here, I chose a small hotel in the city center of Vientiane, recommended by many people, for a convenient trip.
Continuing my Laos 1 month travel itinerary, discovering the center of the country was one of my greatest surprises.
I started in Phonsavan and the Xieng Khouang Plateau, famous for the mysterious Plain of Jars. This unique archaeological site, surrounded by green hills, fascinated me. I stayed at the Vansana Plain of Jars Hotel, a simple but well-located hotel for exploring the Phonsavan region.
Then, I headed to Khammouane, where I had an unforgettable experience: a boat trip to Kong Lor Cave. This 7-km-long natural cave is crossed by an underground river! I stayed at the SpringRiver Resort, in the peaceful and green setting of Khammouane.

I headed to Nakai, where I was impressed by the Flooded Forest Viewpoint: a mysterious submerged forest, bathed in mist at sunrise. Then, I stopped in Thakhek, the starting point of a famous motorbike tour. The mountain and cave landscapes are magnificent. I also visited the Khammouane Museum, the town of Lak Sao, and Wat Sikhottabong, which is distinguished by its French architecture. I stayed at the Thakhek Travel Lodge, perfect for travelers seeking adventure.
Finally, I crossed Hua Phan to Savannakhet, two towns marked by Laos' colonial history and culture. In Savannakhet, I recommend Avalon Residence, comfortable and well located in the center of Savannakhet.
To conclude my Laos 1 month travel itinerary, I spent a week exploring the south of the country, a peaceful and charming region. I stayed on Don Khone Island at the Sala Done Khone Hotel, a haven of peace overlooking the Mekong River. There, I admired the impressive Khone Phapheng Falls, the largest in Southeast Asia.
Then, I headed back up to Champasak to visit Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, majestic at sunrise. For this stop, I stayed at The River Resort, a superb eco-friendly lodge on the banks of the river.
In Pakse, I ended my trip exploring the local markets and visiting Wat Luang, one of the city's largest temples. I recommend the Residence Sisouk Hotel, which is centrally located and very comfortable. This immersion in the south offered me moments of calm, spirituality and natural beauty, perfect to conclude this unique journey to the heart of Laos.
Laos is a conservative country, especially in rural areas and religious sites. I've always made sure to wear clothing that covers my shoulders and knees, especially when visiting temples like Wat Phou or Wat Luang. A light scarf can also be very practical.
Next, don't forget to bring your identification, especially your passport. I've been asked to bring it several times during hotel check-in, security checks, and even when renting a scooter. I always keep a copy and the original in my safe at home. Also, if you're planning an extended stay in Laos like me, you'll need to check the visa or e-visa procedures.
Finally, a very useful little detail: bring an adapter for your electronic devices. Plugs in Laos are often type A, B, or C, and are sometimes incompatible with European chargers. I brought a universal adapter, which saved me a lot of hassle, especially in remote areas.
