Top 06 Things To Do In Quang Tri, Vietnam

1. Pay a visit to Quang Tri Citadel

Acien citadel of Quang Tri
Situated right on the bank of Thach Han river, about 2 km east of National Highway 1A, the citadel was built in the 1800s. Initially constructed by dirt and clay, the fortress was later upgraded using brick with 3m high walls and a perimeter of more than 2km. It  served as the military base for the Nguyen dynasty in central Vietnam.
Under the governing of the French, the citadel became the center of the local and provincial governance apparatus. The French viewed it as a point of importance, adding prisons to entrap the revolutionary comrades. However, it had become the point of operation to disseminate a recruitment center for the Vietnamese fighting force.
Under the American occupation, the fortress is famous for the battle of Quang Tri citadel in 1972, which became one of the most gruesome fights in the American Vietnam War. Lasting 82 days and nights, it was bombarded by more than 300 thousand tons of bombs, equivalent to about 7 nuclear bombs. So much life was lost on both sides of the battlefield that dyed the Thach Han river red with blood. Nowaday, known by the name “the spiritual land”, the place stands not only as a memorial, a reminder of the little memories of war that’s passed and a must see tourist attraction, but also as a cemetery with no tombstone of all those who had fallen for the freedom of the country.
Besides its violent past, the citadel was a true marvel of Vietnamese architecture. Despite the erosion caused by time and the scars of war, what remains serves as undeniable proof that the Vietnamese were just as culturally developed and technologically advanced as any other nation two centuries ago.

2. Take a tour through Khe Sanh / Ta Con Base

What is left of Tacon Base
About 5km from the town of Khe Sanh, Ta Con Base was constructed by the Americans to serve as the runway for their aircrafts of many types and a lookout to keep an eye on the Vietnamese’s army. During the war, the town of Khe Sanh was considered by the US’s strategists as the most important point to keep within the paw of their hand.
Lie in the DMZ, its purpose was to stop and prevent the infiltration of the Northern army back into the Southern territory. It, along with Vay village and Ta Con, form the infamous triangle of the Mc Namara electronic fence. The “fence” was the attempt to cut off supply from the north and stop the Ho Chi Minh trail.
Nicknamed  “Hell on earth” by the US marine,  the base had witnessed some of the worst battles in Vietnam's history. Most noticeable is the Khe Sanh Battle in 1968 which was able to make a name for itself in the world as “The second Dien Bien Phu” and change the whole circumstance of the war in favor of the Vietnamese army. What’s left of the war now remains as a museum, showcasing the remnants of aircrafts and vehicles that were once the prowess of the US military.
In time of peace, the town is known for its Arabica Coffee. With a slide acidity and a drop of tangy aftertaste, It would be the perfect gift from for your friends and family.

3. “Crawling” through Vinh Moc Tunnel

One of many entances of Vinh Moc Tunnel
Lies below Vinh Moc town is the vestige of the old tunnel which was used in the America Vietnam war. Divided into 3 layers and stretching for more than 2000m in length and more than 20m deep, blended completely into Vietnam nature,  the tunnel served not only as a safe haven for the people but also as a storage facility to hide the supplies and equipment.
Digged within 2 years, with the lesson of many collapsed underground bases, Vinh Moc tunnel was fortified and strengthened to assure the safety of the residents. Even though it was an underground shelter, the tunnel can still provide enough space for more than a thousand people, with facilities such as wells, medical centers, surgery rooms, school, meeting hall, radio station,...
The life within the tunnel is nothing that can be called comfortable. Without sunlight, people had to rely on oil lamps to be able to complete any task. High humidity in the winter, unbearable heat in the summer along with the overall unsanitary conditions led to more than 90% of residents having parasites and many other related illnesses which came with having to live underground.
Nowaday, acknowledged as one of Vietnam’s historical sites, Vinh Moc tunnel is the call back to a darker time in the country’s long history.
