Hello, we are a couple from Poitiers, France, and we recently spent 5 days in Siem Reap, Cambodia. What to do in Siem Reap? Before leaving, we asked our friends, and they introduced us to 5 day Siem Reap trip organized by AUTOUR ASIA, Travel agency in Hanoi Vietnam. The trip was tailored to our expectations, making it a personalized experience. We decided to share our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary for couples who have similar travel interests.

As travel and history enthusiasts, we always look for destinations that combine cultural discoveries, nature, and relaxation. While planning our trip, we wondered what to do in Siem Reap to experience an immersive and balanced journey. After speaking with friends who had already visited this destination, they recommended a 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, ideal for exploring not only the temples of Angkor but also the hidden treasures of the region.

This 5 day Siem Reap trip allowed us to fully enjoy every moment, alternating between historical visits, immersion in Khmer culture, and moments of relaxation. We particularly appreciated the diversity of the program, which took us from majestic temples to the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake, with culinary experiences and nature hikes in between. What to do in Siem Reap? We arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the night before, which allowed us to rest after the flight and be ready to start the adventure at sunrise. On the first day of our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, after an early wake-up, we took a tuk-tuk ride to the Angkor temple complex, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site.

What to do in Siem Reap in 5 days? Our first stop was Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s iconic temple. Arriving before dawn allowed us to witness an unforgettable spectacle: the sunrise illuminating the temple’s five majestic towers in golden and orange hues. After exploring the bas-reliefs and galleries of this architectural masterpiece, we continued our journey to Angkor Thom. At its heart stands the Bayon Temple, famous for its towers carved with enigmatic faces that seem to watch you from every angle. The atmosphere there is almost mystical!

Visiting Siem Reap in 5 days, in the late afternoon, we ended our exploration with Ta Prohm, a temple overrun by nature, where massive trees and their sprawling roots entwine the ancient stones. The atmosphere is like a scene from an adventure film. After this day filled with discoveries, we enjoyed dinner at a local restaurant, savoring Khmer specialties such as fish amok and beef lok lak.

2. Day 2: Artisans d’Angkor – Khmer Cooking Class – Apsara Dance

What to do in Siem Reap? After a first day dedicated to temples, we chose to immerse ourselves in Khmer culture. The morning of our second day in the 5 day Siem Reap itinerary started with a visit to Artisans d’Angkor, a social project that preserves traditional Cambodian craftsmanship. We discovered the meticulous work of artisans on silk, stone, and lacquer, and even brought back some handmade souvenirs.

To continue our 5 day Siem Reap trip, the afternoon was devoted to a Khmer cooking class. Upon arrival, we were immersed in the lively atmosphere of the local market, where the vibrant colors of spices and the intoxicating scents of herbs amazed us. Under the attentive supervision of a passionate chef, we discovered with fascination the secrets of traditional cooking, joyfully trying to replicate each technique. The pleasure of seeing our dishes take shape was immense, and the final tasting was an absolute delight! A memorable moment, rich in flavors and discoveries, that will remain engraved in our memories.

Traveling to Siem Reap for 5 days, to end the day beautifully, we attended an Apsara dance performance. What to see in Siem Reap? This traditional ballet tells mythological stories through graceful gestures and sumptuous costumes. The elegance of the dancers and the enchanting music transported us to another time.

3. Day 3: Phnom Kulen National Park – Beng Mealea Temple

What to do in Siem Reap? In our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, we dedicated this day to exploring nature and lesser-known sites around Siem Reap. Early in the morning, we headed to Phnom Kulen National Park, a sacred place for the Khmer people. After a hike through the jungle, we reached the River of a Thousand Lingas, where ancient sculptures are carved into the riverbed. We then enjoyed a refreshing swim under the park’s magnificent waterfall.

On a 5-day trip to Siem Reap, on the way back, we explored Beng Mealea, a temple lost in the jungle that resembles the ruins of Angkor before their restoration. Here, nature has reclaimed its rights, and we felt like explorers discovering a forgotten site. The wild and mysterious atmosphere of this place deeply moved us.

On this fourth day of our 5 day Siem Reap trip, we decided to relax and explore the local atmosphere through its markets. Our morning began with a traditional Khmer massage experience. After several days of walking and sightseeing, nothing was better than enjoying the benefits of this ancient therapy. Unlike dynamic Thai massages, Khmer massage is gentler, combining light pressure and stretching to deeply relax the muscles. A well-deserved break in our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary!

5. Day 5: Siem Reap - Departure

What to do in Siem Reap? To end our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, we chose to enjoy a peaceful morning, soaking in the city’s unique atmosphere one last time. After breakfast at a local café, we took a final stroll along the river, watching locals start their day and admiring the colonial architecture. Before leaving, we revisited a few artisan shops to bring home souvenirs from our 5 day Siem Reap trip—silks, sculptures, and spices that would remind us of our adventure.

Then, it was time to head to the airport, feeling both satisfied and nostalgic. This 5 day Siem Reap itinerary was an unforgettable experience!

III. Some regrets after our 5 days in Siem Reap

After our 5-day trip to Siem Reap, we leave with incredible memories. However, as with any journey, there are always a few small regrets… things we wish we had done differently or experiences we had to leave out due to lack of time.

One of our first regrets is not being able to explore the Angkor Archaeological Park more thoroughly. Although we visited Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm, we would have loved to discover other more remote temples, such as Preah Khan or Banteay Srei, known for their delicate carvings. With an extra day, we would have surely taken the time to visit these lesser-known sites.

We also realized that 5 days in Siem Reap go by very quickly, especially when trying to combine historical heritage, nature, and cultural immersion. We would have liked to dedicate more time to discovering local life, perhaps by spending a night in a floating village on Tonle Sap to better understand the daily life of its inhabitants.

Finally, during our 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, we were amazed by the lively atmosphere of Pub Street, but we may have underestimated the richness of Siem Reap’s cultural scene beyond the typical tourist performances. After doing some research afterward, we discovered that there are art galleries and traditional dance centers that we would have liked to visit to better understand Cambodia’s cultural revival after its difficult past.

That being said, these few regrets only strengthen our desire to return to Siem Reap one day. This first 5 day Siem Reap trip gave us a wonderful introduction to this city and its exceptional heritage, but we now know there is still so much left to explore.

IV. Tips for your trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia

After our 5-day Siem Reap trip, we have gathered some practical tips that might help you plan your own stay and make the most of this fascinating destination. Here are our recommendations to make your 5 day Siem Reap itinerary even more enjoyable.

  1. Clothing & Weather: It is advisable to wear light clothing made of cotton or linen to cope with the heat. When visiting the Angkor temples, remember to cover your shoulders and knees with long pants, a long skirt, or a shawl. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

  2. Transportation: To get around easily, we recommend taking a tuk-tuk, which is both convenient and affordable. Those who love adventure can opt for biking to explore the surrounding areas. For longer distances, it is better to book a private car with a driver.

  3. Language: It is useful to learn a few words of Khmer, even though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Knowing some basic phrases can enhance your 5 days in Siem Reap and allow for more authentic interactions.

  4. Currency: It is advisable to carry small US dollar bills, as they are accepted everywhere. However, keep in mind that change is often given in Cambodian riels.

  5. Health & Safety: During your 5 day Siem Reap itinerary, to avoid any inconvenience, it is best to drink only bottled water and apply mosquito repellent. Siem Reap is a safe city, but it is recommended to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

Is it possible to visit Siem Reap in less than 5 days?

While a 5-day Siem Reap itinerary allows you to explore the region in depth, it is possible to shorten your trip to 3 or even 2 days by focusing on the main highlights. For a short stay, we recommend visiting: The main Angkor temples (Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm) and some key spots in the city. However, for a more immersive experience, including lesser-known temples, floating villages, and cultural activities such as a cooking class, a 5 day trip to Siem Reap is ideal.
