The Phnom Penh weather was perfect, with sunny days and pleasant temperatures, ideal for sightseeing. However, December is also the peak tourist season, so the city was bustling with visitors. This didn’t diminish our enjoyment, and we thoroughly made the most of our trip. For those looking for a quieter and less crowded experience, the low or mid-season, from May to October, might be an excellent alternative.
II. Our 5-Day Phnom Penh Itinerary as a Couple with Autour Asia
If you don’t have much experience with Phnom Penh, we recommend booking an organized trip with a travel agency for a more complete experience. We planned a couple trip during 5 days in Phnom Penh. We bought a few silver bracelets as gifts for our two daughters and some unique decorative paintings depicting Cambodian street scenes. We spent time chatting with vendors and tasting local snacks.
The afternoon was dedicated to pure relaxation at
Bodia Spa, one of the best spas in the city. It was a highlight of our trip, offering a unique relaxation experience. We chose a couple’s massage with natural essential oils, which immersed us in a state of absolute calm. The spa’s soothing decor and attentive service allowed us to deeply unwind and reconnect after a busy day. After several days of walking and exploring Phnom Penh, this relaxing massage felt like it recharged our batteries. Fortunately, we were taken care of by two experienced therapists who paid special attention to our feet after many hours of activities.
3. Day 3: A Day of Adventure Near Phnom Penh
We began the third day of our 5-day Phnom Penh itinerary with an excursion to Koh Dach, a peaceful little island located about an hour from the city.
As soon as we arrived, the island’s tranquil atmosphere immediately captivated us. We visited the weaving village, where we observed artisans at work and discovered the ancestral art of silk weaving. A bike ride around the island allowed us to admire the splendid rice fields and immerse ourselves in the serenity of the surroundings. The natural beauty of Koh Dach, with its rural landscapes and traditional houses, is perfect for couples seeking calm and an escape from the bustle of the city. After our visit, we purchased a few silk scarves - unique souvenirs that we particularly cherish from this trip.
The afternoon was dedicated to a romantic
cruise on the Mekong, one of Asia's greatest rivers. Onboard a private boat, we slowly drifted along the waters, enjoying the river’s silence and the impressive panorama. At sunset, the golden hues that enveloped the sky and water created a magical atmosphere. During the cruise, we savored a delicious dinner onboard, accompanied by refreshing cocktails, while admiring the scenery as it unfolded. We highly recommend this experience to all couples visiting Phnom Penh, as the river's calmness and the romantic ambiance aboard the boat enhance the intimate and soothing nature of this shared moment.
4. Day 4: History and a Peaceful Retreat
Our day began with a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a place steeped in gravity and memory. Once a school, this building was transformed into a prison under the Khmer Rouge regime, immersing us in a dark and harrowing chapter of Cambodian history. Though the atmosphere was heavy, this visit proved essential to better understand the scope and repercussions of this tragic period. The museum, remarkably organized, features poignant exhibits and gripping testimonies that deeply moved us.
After this intense experience, we felt the need to recharge in a serene place:
Wat Phnom, one of Phnom Penh’s most famous temples. Nestled on a hill, this sanctuary offers a stunning view of the city. We strolled through the lush gardens, lulled by birdsong and enveloped by the site’s tranquility. This peaceful moment allowed us to reflect, make wishes for the future, and strengthen our bond.
We started our morning with a visit to AEON Mall Sen Sok. While some shops felt a bit too conventional, we still found a few items we liked and took the opportunity to treat ourselves to small personal gifts after 5 days in Phnom Penh. After shopping, we stopped at a lovely café to enjoy a refreshing drink. Although the place was crowded and occasionally noisy, it didn’t diminish the pleasure of sharing this moment together in a vibrant atmosphere.
The small stands and markets were brimming with unique treasures: carefully woven silk scarves, handcrafted wooden sculptures, and traditional Khmer jewelry. However, negotiating prices under the market’s stifling heat proved a bit exhausting, and some vendors weren’t very enthusiastic about bargaining. Despite this, the experience was rich and fascinating, especially when we could chat with the artisans and listen to their compelling stories about the techniques and symbols behind each creation.
III. Practical Tips for a couple trip during 5 days in Phnom Penh
- Plan your itinerary: Alternate historical visits (e.g., Tuol Sleng Museum) with relaxing activities like a sunset cruise on the Mekong.
