Remarks On The Central Cambodia 7-day Tour By Ms Monica

Kampong Thom, Cambodia

Hi all,

If I had to choose one trip to Cambodia that left the deepest impression on me, it wouldn’t be the visit to Angkor Wat or even the capital, Phnom Penh. It would be the journey through Central Cambodia, where I experienced unique and unforgettable moments. In collaboration with Autour Asia, a travel agency in Cambodia specializing in authentic and immersive experiences, I embarked on a Central Cambodia 7-day tour that revealed the soul of Cambodia. This Central Cambodia itinerary 7 days offered a truly personalized and culturally rich adventure.

I. Why is this Central Cambodia 7-day tour unique?

Oudong, Kampong Speu, Cambodia

A 7-day tour to Central Cambodia can take many forms, but this one stands out for its authenticity and how far it takes you from the typical tourist path. By choosing to travel to the heart of Central Cambodia, I discovered a little-known facet of the country, far removed from the usual tourist focus on Angkor Wat or the well-known parts of Phnom Penh. For 1 week in Cambodia, I traveled through provinces rich in history and nature, such as Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, and Kampong Speu. This 7-day Cambodia itinerary is ideal for travelers looking for authenticity, local immersion and responsible tourism practices.

II. What to do in Cambodia in 7 days? Things to do in central Cambodia

Day 1: Arrival in Phnom Penh

The first day of my Central Cambodia 7-day tour started with Phnom Penh. I landed at the airport in the humid heat and immediately felt the excitement of the capital. After collecting my luggage, I booked a Grab for an affordable fare, which quickly took me to my hotel. I admired the bustling avenues filled with vendors and flanked by colonial-era buildings. I was deeply moved by the striking contrasts between the old and the modern, the golden luxury of the Palais Royal and the modest shops of the working-class districts.

Things to do in Phnom Penh: Visit the Royal Palace

In the afternoon, I explored must-see landmarks from the 1 week itinerary in Central Cambodia such as the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. As someone who enjoys cultural experiences, I found the Royal Palace to be a highlight, the official residence of the Cambodian king. I was amazed by the Throne Room’s golden spires and the intricate architecture of the Silver Pagoda, whose floor is paved with silver tiles. As I gazed at the silver-covered Buddhas, I felt a deep inner peace. I took the time to sit under a hundred-year-old banyan tree, reflecting on the thousand-year-old history of this country. To end the day, I took a walk along the riverside, admiring a magical sunset that closed this fascinating experience.

Day 2: Phnom Penh – Kampong Chhnang

During this Central Cambodia 7-day tour, the second day started gently with a traditional breakfast: sticky rice, fresh fruit and ginger tea. I then took the road to Kampong Chhnang, crossing two hours of rice fields as far as the eye could see. Watching the stilt houses adapt to seasonal floods, I realized how even transient structures can feel deeply rooted. This Central Cambodia itinerary 7 days then led me to explore a centuries-old craft still alive today. There, I discovered traditional pottery, where each family preserves skills passed down through generations. I myself turned a small vase, touched by the force of a thousand-year-old gesture.

Then, embarked on a boat, I sailed into the heart of the floating villages. After a short tuk-tuk ride to the local port, a boatman drove me down the Mekong River through groups of fishing boats and a floating mosque. The village, made up of hundreds of interconnected houseboats, seemed to float peacefully between tradition and modernity — seemed to float peacefully between tradition and modernity, with some boats even equipped with solar panels or satellite dishes. Daily life goes on there, between laundry, children's games and boat repairs, in an almost poetic indifference to the presence of visitors. It was an authentic and fascinating glimpse of life — a bit pricey, yes, but well worth it. This 7 days Central Cambodia tour offered me a unique immersion, far from the tourist clichés.

Day 3: Kampong Chhnang – Kampong Thom

In the morning, I left the water for the Skun market in Kampong Thom, a highlight of my Central Cambodia 7-day tour. This amazing place exhibits stalls of grilled arachnids and dried shellfish. I tasted the crispy spiders with apprehension — yes, I ate a tarantula at the Skun Insect Market! And honestly, it's not as bad as it sounds. What I didn't know at the time was that these tarantulas, now threatened by deforestation, are also being overexploited due to tourist demand. I tried it out of curiosity — not to judge — but after a talk with an entomologist in Siem Reap, I wanted to convey this message. Then, I dared to try pra hoc, this fermented paste with a powerful smell, whose persistent taste symbolizes in my eyes the deep memory of the 1-week trip to Cambodia.

Day 4: Kampong Thom – Kampong Speu

The next day, I visited Sambor Prei Kuk, where towering temples entwined with ancient trees rise like forgotten cathedrals. This site, the ancient pre-Angkorian capital known as Isanapura, is definitely worth a visit. Exploring on foot or by bike, I discovered an authentic, simple and soothing rural way of life. It is easy to organize a trip to the region from Kampong Thom, a province full of charm. As I approached a brick heated by the sun, I brushed its surface and imagined the hands of seventh-century craftsmen. The sunset enveloped the ruins in a golden light. An unusual and spiritual stage of my 1-week itinerary in Central Cambodia.

Day 5: Kampong Speu

At daybreak, I took the road back to Kampong Speu, leaving the flooded plains for the dense forest. The sight of playful monkeys and bright butterflies marked the entrance to another world, where every sound resonates with wildlife. This Central Cambodia 7-day tour offered me the rare opportunity to discover a little-known facet of the Khmer country: that of pure adventure.

We left Route 132 and headed toward the remote village of Srae Kan Bei, at the foot of Mount Aural, we immediately encountered a rough, bumpy track, marked by potholes and streams to cross. At the end of the morning, I started the ascent of Phnom Aural, the highest point in Cambodia at 1,813 meters. The muddy trails and tropical rain tested me — yet each drop seemed to wash away both sweat and hesitation, while the canopy put on a dazzling display of green. An unforgettable adventure experience in this Cambodia itinerary 1 week that deeply reconnected me to nature.

Day 6: Kampong Speu – Return to Phnom Penh

Back in Phnom Penh for the last stop of my Central Cambodia 7-day tour, I started the morning with a poignant visit to the Tuol Sleng Museum. A former high school that became a prison under the Khmer Rouge, this S-21 center exposes the faces of the victims and the traces of a tragic past. A little further away, at Choeung Ek, the Killing Fields and their stupa filled with skulls bear witness to the scale of the atrocities. These places of memory confronted me with the horror, but also with the strength of the Cambodian people, making this 7-day Cambodia Central itinerary a striking and profound experience.

In the afternoon, I found the joyful hustle and bustle of the central market, a hive of activity beneath Art Deco domes. I strolled between the stalls, bargained for Kampot pepper, took in the aroma of fragrant, colorful spices and chose some handmade fabrics as souvenirs. To end the day, I sat down at a small street canteen and enjoyed a spicy beef Lok Lak, accompanied by a fried egg and fragrant rice. This simple but tasty dish sums up the spirit of this 7-day trip to Cambodia: intense, full of contrasts, and profoundly human.

Day 7: Last moments and departure

On the last morning, before concluding my Central Cambodia 7-day tour, I took a quiet moment on a terrace on the banks of the Mekong. I watched the hustle and bustle of fishermen and trading boats, and I thought back to every highlight of that week. Before going to the airport, I took the time to write a few words in my travel diary: "Thank you to the inhabitants for their welcome, thank you to the Khmer land for its generosity." I am closing this chapter of my 7-day itinerary in Cambodia, but I carry with me the promise to return.
