When talking about Cambodia trip, people often think of the capital, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap with its famous Angkor Wat, or the beautiful islands and beaches in Sihanoukville. However, if you are looking for a simpler, more authentic destination where you can have genuine experiences with the locals, I recommend spending 5 days in Kratie like I did. I. Overview of our 5-day trip to Kratie

Where to go in Cambodia? After exploring Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, my friends and I wanted a different experience, so we decided to visit more untouched places. Our 5-day trip to Kratie and Mondulkiri offered a variety of experiences, from peaceful riverside landscapes to majestic mountains and forests. Kratie, a small town by the Mekong River, stands out with its slow pace of life, Khmer cultural heritage, and unspoiled nature. Meanwhile, Mondulkiri offers a completely different atmosphere with its rolling green hills, stunning waterfalls, and the traditional life of the Bunong people.

In Kratie, we explored cultural and natural attractions. We visited ancient spiritual sites such as Roka Kandal Pagoda, which showcases Khmer culture, and the 100-Pillar Pagoda. One of the most unforgettable memories of our 5-day Kratie itinerary was our visit to Kampi to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins and relax at Kampi Rapids. On the third day, we went to Koh Trong Island, rented bicycles, and rode through peaceful village roads before returning to Kratie for a rest.

During our Kratie trip in 5 days, we also explored another Cambodian destination — Mondulkiri. Here, we visited Bousra Waterfall, a Bunong village, and experienced the Elephant Valley Project, where elephants are protected in their natural environment. Before ending our journey, we stopped at Phnom Doh Kromom Hill to admire the panoramic view of Mondulkiri’s mountains and forests.

II. Detailed itinerary of our itinerary Kratie 5 days

1. Day 1 : Kratie – Roka Kandal Pagoda – Mekong River Cruise

In this Cambodia trip, our group departed from Phnom Penh to Kratie, a journey of about five hours. We arrived in Kratie at noon and had lunch at a local restaurant before checking into our hotel and taking a short rest before starting our 5-day trip in Kratie. We began our first day with a walk along the Mekong River, just a few steps from our accommodation. Along the way, we visited Roka Kandal Pagoda, an ancient temple with traditional Khmer architecture located right by the river.

2. Day 2 : Kratie – 100-Column Pagoda – Dolphin Watching

In the morning, we started the day with breakfast at a local eatery before heading to the 100-Column Pagoda (Wat Sorsor Moi Roi), one of the top places to visit in Kratie. This pagoda is famous for its unique architecture and historical value, deeply connected to Khmer culture.

3. Day 3 : Kratie - Discovering Koh Trong Island

On the morning of the third day of our 5-day Kratie itinerary, we had breakfast and headed to the ferry terminal to reach Koh Trong Island. It only took a few minutes by boat from Kratie before we saw the island appear in front of us. After renting bicycles, our group began exploring the island, riding through tree-lined village roads, lush green fields, and traditional stilt houses of the locals. Along the way, we stopped to visit the Lotus Pond and some fruit gardens, where the locals invited us to taste seasonal fruits.

At noon, we had lunch at a homestay on the island, enjoying simple local dishes and chatting with the host about life on Koh Trong. After some rest, we took the boat back to Kratie. So what to do in Kratie in the afternoon? After returning to Kratie, we decided to rent motorbikes to explore more corners of the province. This 5-day trip in Kratie not only allowed us to relax and enjoy exciting outdoor activities but also helped us learn more about the culture and lifestyle of Cambodians in particular and Southeast Asians in general. We interacted with some locals, visited markets, and bought local specialties.

4. Day 4 : Kratie - Mondulkiri - Bousra Waterfall

The next morning, a few members of our group woke up early to watch the sunrise by the Mekong River and take a short walk. Then, we returned to the hotel for breakfast and packed our luggage to head to our next destination in our 5 days in Kratie: Mondulkiri Province. The journey from Kratie to Mondulkiri took about four hours, passing through mountainous forests and winding roads typical of eastern Cambodia. We arrived in Sen Monorom at noon and stopped at a local restaurant for lunch before starting our adventure in Mondulkiri.

What to do in Mondulkiri on the first day? That afternoon, our first destination was Bousra Waterfall—one of Cambodia’s largest waterfalls. We spent time walking around the waterfall, feeling the cool mist rising from the rushing water. After that, we visited a Bunong village to learn about the culture and life of the indigenous community - one of the top best things to do in Mondulkiri. In the late afternoon, we returned to Sen Monorom, checked into our hotel, and ended the day with a relaxing dinner in the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

5. Day 5 : Mondulkiri - Elephant Valley Project - Phnom Doh Kromom Hill

What I loved most about this Kratie 5-day itinerary was seeing so many animals—a fantastic experience for animal lovers like me. On the last day, we explored the Elephant Valley Project, a famous elephant sanctuary - a must-visit place during your Cambodia trip. Here, we had the chance to observe elephants in their natural habitat, learn about conservation efforts, and understand the lives of rescued elephants. There were no elephant rides or performances—just walking alongside them as they roamed the forest.

After visiting the sanctuary, we returned to Sen Monorom for lunch before continuing our trip. If you want to visit Mondulkiri and Kratie in 5 days, don’t miss Phnom Doh Kromom Hill, a well-known viewpoint. From there, we could see the vast landscape of Mondulkiri, with endless forests and red dirt roads. The cool breeze on the hill provided a refreshing break after days of travel.

At the end of the day, we packed our luggage and prepared to return to Phnom Penh. Our trip to Kratie in 5 days ended with diverse experiences, from breathtaking natural landscapes to unique local cultures.

III. Travel tips for a 5-day Kratie trip

• The journey from Phnom Penh to Kratie is quite long, so choosing a high-quality vehicle is essential for a comfortable 5-day Kratie trip. From Kratie to Mondulkiri, renting a private car or minivan is the most convenient option. It’s also best to book accommodations in advance, especially during peak season, to avoid fully booked hotels.
