Cambodia in April, a destination of choice to discover the cultural and natural wealth of this Southeast Asian country. Benefiting from pleasant weather in Cambodia in April and varied landscapes, this country offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience. Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure or cultural discoveries, Cambodia in April will meet all your expectations.
Cambodia in April marks a period of climatic transition, characterized by a significant increase in temperatures. The dry season, although advanced, results in hot and dry weather conditions, with thermal averages around 30° C. However, it is common to observe heat peaks, especially at the beginning of the month, where maximum temperatures can exceed 35° C.
In the second half of the month, the rainfall pattern changes, marking the gradual beginning of the weather in Cambodia in April. Rainfall, although moderate, becomes more frequent, bringing a welcome refreshment after the intense heat. These showers, which are usually short-lived, help to alleviate humidity and regulate temperatures.
Tourism in Cambodia in April is typically lower than during the peak dry season. In fact, Cambodia in April is the shoulder season. This decrease in visitors allows for a more expansive atmosphere at popular attractions. The rising temperatures of weather in Cambodia in April also help to deter some travelers, which is great news if you want to see the country's must-see attractions without sharing them with large crowds. The warm temperatures invite outdoor activities, such as swimming or hiking, while the lush green nature offers stunning scenery. Additionally, Khmer New Year, celebrated in April, is a major cultural event that draws many visitors.
II. What to do in Cambodia in April? Khmer New Year in Cambodia in April
The Khmer New Year, or Chol Chnam Thmey, is the most important festival in Cambodia in April. It takes place every year in April, according to the Buddhist lunisolar calendar, marking the beginning of the new year. The festivities, on a large scale, are steeped in traditions and celebrations.
During this period, life in Cambodia slows down: economic activities are suspended, schools and many businesses close, while a large part of the population returns to their home villages to celebrate with family. One of the highlights of the Khmer New Year is the water festival, or Bon Om Touk. Cambodians engage in joyful water fights, a symbol of purification and renewal. This tradition allows people to cool off and share moments of conviviality in a festive and warm atmosphere.
III. What to visit in Cambodia in April?
1. Siem Reap - Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia in April
A trip to Cambodia in April would not be complete without a visit to the Angkor archaeological complex, located near Siem Reap. This exceptional site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bears witness to the height of the Khmer empire and offers a unique insight into a civilization that marked Southeast Asia between the 9th and 15th centuries.
In the heart of Angkor, the Angkor Wat temple stands out for its colossal proportions and architectural beauty. Dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, this religious monument is considered one of the largest temples in the world. Its narrative bas-reliefs, of exceptional finesse, retrace episodes from Hindu mythology and testify to the high level of mastery achieved by Khmer artists.
Beyond Angkor Wat, the Angkor archaeological complex is home to a multitude of temples, each with unique architectural features and sculpted decorations. The Bayon, with its countless smiling faces, is particularly emblematic. Ta Prohm, meanwhile, offers a striking spectacle with its ruins overgrown with vegetation, creating an atmosphere that is both mysterious and romantic with the weather in Cambodia in April.
2. Phnom Penh: immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere of the capital
Phnom Penh, the vibrant capital of Cambodia, is a city that seduces with its blend of modernity and ancestral traditions. In Cambodia in April, the city takes on a special shine, offering visitors an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Khmer New Year celebrations.
April is the hottest month of the year in Phnom Penh, but it is also the most festive. The streets of the capital come alive with the sounds of traditional music and are adorned with colorful decorations. Alongside the festivities, Phnom Penh offers the opportunity to delve into its rich past. The Royal Palace, with its grandiose architecture and lush gardens, is a testament to the grandeur of the Khmer empire. A visit to the Silver Pagoda, located within the complex, is a true delight for the eyes. History buffs should not miss the National Museum and the memorial sites of the Khmer Rouge period. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the Tuol Sleng GenocideMuseum are emotionally charged sites that bear witness to the atrocities committed during this dark chapter of Cambodian history.
3. Tonle Sap Lake: Southeast Asia's Largest Freshwater Lake
Just 25 kilometers from Siem Reap, Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, offers a unique natural and cultural spectacle. Tonle Sap is famous for its floating villages, entire communities that live on the water and move with the seasons. Houses on stilts, floating markets and floating schools bear witness to a way of life closely linked to water. The Khmer New Year in Cambodia in April is an opportunity to discover the ancestral traditions of the communities living on the lake. The inhabitants decorate their floating houses, organize boat races and traditional dances.
Beyond the cultural aspect, Tonle Sap Lake is home to exceptional biodiversity. Many species of migratory birds find refuge there, while the waters are home to a rich and varied aquatic fauna under the weather in Cambodia in April. The flooded forests, which border the lake, provide an ideal habitat for many plant and animal species.

For those looking for a wilder and more authentic setting, the islands located off the coast of Sihanoukville are a real invitation to a change of scenery. Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Ta Kiev are particularly appreciated for their fine sandy beaches, turquoise waters and unspoiled nature.

Nature lovers can explore the many hiking trails that wind through the surrounding hills. Among the must-see sites, the Kbal Chhay waterfalls offer a welcome refreshment on hot days.
Nearby, Kampot is a town full of authenticity, famous in particular for its pepper plantations. This pepper, known worldwide for its unique flavor, makes the region famous in Cambodia in April. A visit to these plantations allows you to discover the secrets of its cultivation and taste different varieties. The city also offers a getaway to exceptional natural sites, such as the peaceful lake surrounded by rice fields and forests, a true haven of tranquility. Since April in Cambodia is hot and dry, pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for temple visits. Wonderful trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam
We reached out to Tina for our trip to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, and the experience she arranged for us was absolutely wonderful. Our time in the Mekong was filled with unforgettable and authentic experiences that truly allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culture and lifestyle.
Among the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to make rice paper by hand, which was not only fascinating but also gave us a deep appreciation for the skill and effort involved in this traditional craft. We also visited a coconut candy factory, where we observed the intricate process of making these delicious treats and even had the chance to taste them fresh from the production line. One of the most memorable parts of our journey was rowing down the serene waterways in a traditional sampan, surrounded by the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere of the delta.
We are incredibly grateful to Autour Asia for organizing such a rich and meaningful itinerary, and especially to Tina for her meticulous planning and dedication to providing us with an authentic experience. Her attention to detail and passion for showcasing the beauty and culture of Vietnam truly made this trip special. Thank you, Tina, for an unforgettable adventure in the Mekong Delta!
