I. Weather in Chiang Mai in 5 Days

When to go to Chiang Mai? We decided to visit Chiang Mai during late December, a time renowned for its cool, pleasant weather, making it an ideal choice for our 5 days in Chiang Mai. The winter months from November to February offer the best climate for sightseeing and outdoor activities. During our stay, the temperature ranged from a cool 18°C in the mornings to 28°C during the day. This comfortable weather made it easy to enjoy our tours without the discomfort of extreme heat or humidity.
Choosing this time of year also meant avoiding the rainy season, which can sometimes disrupt outdoor plans. The mild weather was perfect for exploring the temples, trekking through national parks, and spending time with elephants. We booked our tours through Autour Asia, a well-known tour company in Thailand, and their professional planning ensured we made the most of this favorable weather.

We arrived in Chiang Mai after a smooth flight, and our airport transfer was arranged by Autour Asia. After checking into our hotel, we had the rest of the day to explore the city at our own pace. Chiang Mai’s Old Town, with its ancient temples, peaceful streets, and local markets, provided the perfect introduction to this charming city. We spent the evening taking a leisurely walk and sampling some local dishes. This was the perfect way to start our Chiang Mai 5 days itinerary, as it allowed us to ease into the local culture.

What to do in Chiang Mai ? The second day was packed with activities. We started with a walking tour of the Old Town, where we visited Wat Phra Singh, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Chedi Luang - three of Chiang Mai's most important temples. Each one was magnificent in its own way, showcasing the city's rich history and beautiful architecture.

Next, we embarked on a rickshaw ride through the narrow streets, where we saw traditional homes and local life up close. We then visited the vibrant Warorot Market, which was a bustling hub of activity. In the evening, we made our way to Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most famous landmarks, offering breathtaking views of the city. Our day ended with a stroll through the Night Market, which offered everything from handmade goods to local snacks. It was a perfect day of sightseeing and cultural immersion.

3. Day 3: Chiang Mai - Elephant Jungle Sanctuary

Chiang Mai - Elephant Jungle Sanctuary
Day 3 took us to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, about 1.5 hours outside of Chiang Mai. This was one of the highlights of our Chiang Mai itinerary 5 days, one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai. We were greeted by friendly staff, who introduced us to the elephants and taught us about their history and behavior. We had the chance to feed, interact with, and bathe the elephants in the river. It was an incredibly heartwarming experience, and we loved knowing that the sanctuary is committed to ethical treatment and conservation of elephants.
The only downside was the long drive to and from the sanctuary, which took up a large portion of the day. However, the time spent with the elephants made the journey worthwhile, and we returned to the city with unforgettable memories.

4. Day 4: Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon - Chiang Mai

Doi Inthanon National Park
Day 4 took us to Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand’s highest peak. The drive took about two hours, and along the way, we enjoyed the scenic views of coffee plantations, rice terraces, and flower farms. Once we arrived, we embarked on a jungle trek, which led us to a stunning waterfall - it was a highlight of the day.
We also visited the Pagagayaw Karen hill tribe village, where we learned about the local tribe’s culture and enjoyed freshly brewed coffee made from beans grown in the area. The trek through the lush jungle was invigorating, and the cooler temperatures at the peak were a refreshing change from the city heat.
Vachiratharn Waterfall in Chiang Mai
Our last stop was the Vachiratharn Waterfall, where we took photos and enjoyed the cool mist. We concluded our visit with a stop at the Napamaytanidol Chedi, an impressive chedi built to honor King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. It was a physically demanding day, but the natural beauty and cultural experiences made it incredibly rewarding.

5. Day 5: Chiang Mai - Departure

What to do in Chiang Mai in 5 days? On our final day, we had a few hours to relax and enjoy Chiang Mai’s charming streets. We took a stroll through the Sunday Walking Street Market, which was quieter than the Night Market but equally vibrant, offering a more relaxed shopping experience. After a leisurely lunch, we said goodbye to Chiang Mai, thankful for the incredible memories we made over the past five days.

III. Travel tips for your visit

To help you make the most of your Chiang Mai 5 days itinerary, here are a few travel tips:

  • Book your tours in advance: Many of the best things to do in Chiang Mai, like visiting the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary or taking a trip to Doi Inthanon, can get fully booked, especially during the high season. We recommend booking your tours in advance through a reliable company like Thailand Tour Company to ensure availability.

  • Pack layers: Even though it’s warm during the day, evenings - especially at higher altitudes - can be chilly. Bring a light jacket or sweater for your evening activities, especially when heading up to Doi Suthep or Doi Inthanon.

  • Stay hydrated: Chiang Mai’s warm weather, particularly during midday, can be dehydrating. Be sure to carry water with you as you explore the city and its surrounding natural sites.

  • Respect local customs: When visiting temples, remember to dress modestly (covering your shoulders and knees) and remove your shoes before entering temple buildings.

  • Be prepared for long drives: Some of the best things to do in Chiang Mai, like visiting Doi Inthanon or the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, involve long drives. Bring snacks, entertainment, and be ready for a few hours on the road.
